That aside, the majority of the jungle action is very good indeed. I really like that panel. Cats are preposterously supple, and there are plenty of photos of them twisting in mid-air while focusing on a target. Yeah, pretty much. When there weren't flying squirrels to worry about.
Harry Lime
I think it's a great drawing and I'm not disputing a cat's agility, the tiger just seems a tad too looooong. AJD

AJD
Quite a few Australian Sheena issues have come my way lately. As well as the #1 above I managed to get 2 and 3 as well. I've shown you lots of Sheena jungle action over the years, so for this under the covers look we'll take a look at the work of Australian artist Phil Crouch. I can't find muchh about him, other than him doing quite a few humour and general interest pages in Australian comics in the 1950s. First, the (allegedly) interesting snippets in "did you know" from #2: And this short funny animal story - which seems to owe quite a bit to Disney comics - from #3. Google UK is equally unhelpful on the matter of Mr Crouch's history (I'm sure that search results differ by country) - just passing one line references here and there. I've often been referred to as a Crouch myself funnily enough (get your 'c' word jokes in now) due to the surname resemblance. I'm guessing Phil is long gone, was probably paid a pittance for his work, but loved what he did. We'll never know, eh. AJD

Have you got the #1? The oar propelled balloon made me laugh, they surely didn't do that....did they? On a related, similarly implausible note I watched The Aeronauts this week. Not a bad film, quite gripping (literally) in places but with a fundamental disregard for the amount of oxygen needed to keep a person alive. There's a link here in that Crouch also did backup stories in the Australian Action Comic title - which in this case had nothing to do with Superman, but contained Lone Avenger by Lawson as a feature. And all of the titles Sheena, Lone Avenger and Action were in the H.J. Edwards stable. (Though Action started elsewhere until #39. Harry Lime
Sorry, Andy for being an insufficiently_thoughtful_person. I've just seen the #1. I thought it was a #4 but with an Australian colouring. AJD
AJD
Back to the US for the latest addition - the first GGA cover art on Wings. In fact, it was the only GGA cover until #69. They only became a staple with #82. Some good news and bad news about this issue. The good news is that it's big and thick - lots of reading for a dime. The bad news is that most of the reading is pretty dire. There are some really stupid story elements between these covers. That said, it's far from being a complete loss. I liked this splash of everyone's favourite redhead, Jane Martin. (Scand from the digital comic museum - my copy is a little fragile for squishing onto a scanner...) And there's always fun when Hitler is around... And despite the comic being printed in 1942, one story preempts the kamikaze attacks of 1945, curiously on both sides: Page 27 seems a bit weird. There were examples of allied pilots deliberately crashing into targets, but invariably only when the plane and/or pilot had been hit and disabled beyond a reasonable chance of escape. It seems a little out of place in 1942 American war story telling. Robot Man, Point Five and Get Marwood & I 2
Get Marwood & I
Nice cover. There's the merest hint there, that with one reasonable tug, that that dress might be coming off. I'm sure that wasn't in the artist's mind of course. No way. Nor any of the red blooded readers. Anyway, I wonder who Maggie was?

Also did Greasemonkey Griffin really get Hitler to join him in a remake of Busy Bodies? Get Marwood & I
AJD
This is a book I have had on my wants list for my war bonds collection for at least five years. Finally the right copy came along. Here are a couple of the splash pages. I really like the bizarre Catwoman one. There's an interesting "alternative world" story in this issue - what Batman and Robin's life would be like if the Nazis won WW2. I'll try to scan it from a reprint later. A State Forest concern but we get to go too. Nothing much, under control but needed patrolling. Now we have had a little rain which is great, but EVERYONE is so on edge that they are jumping at shadows, calling emergency numbers because they have "smelled smoke" or seen some smoke "they think". And those calls cannot be ignored. We have to go and check. Still, we'd rather go out and find nothing than find ourselves calling for support and spending the next twelve hours on a fireground. Thanks for the interest, now off to annoy Andrew! Thanks for the unpaid, exhausting and potentially life-ending service you give freely to the nation. That you do not get any form of remuneration is an Australian disgrace. From me - a huge THANKYOU. AJD and Point Five

I know how long you've been looking for one of these - and this one is in very nice condition. You are right about the Catwoman. The stories that featured her from the early days were a real "pot-luck" as to what outfit she'd rock up in and whether she'd be villainess or seductress. An "Elseworlds" before "Elseworlds"? Didn't DC describe them as "imaginary stories" which even as a kid I thought very funny, I mean all of them are imaginary, but I suppose putting something like "Non-canonical" on the cover would produce a lot of head scratching in their customers. AJD
This just in - a Disney war stamps album! Back cover: And a page to stick your war stamps: I also bid on some war stamps but missed out. But there are quite a few around and they aren't especially expensive, so I'll get some at some stage. This is an odd book in some ways. I suspect it was modified for publication in Australia from a British or Canadian publication. Here's the inside front cover: And the facing page (complete with origanl owner's name): Nothing especially Australian about those - US/UK solidarity is the order of the day. Finally, here's an interior page, complete with axis wolves: This was a really interesting piece to get. I'd never seen one before. And with that, I'm going to wrap up this thread. For a variety of reasons I'm not really feeling it as much these days, and American comics are now pretty much out of my reach given recent currency movements. I'll continue to post items in other threads from time to time - the one here might end up in the war bonds thread, for example - but I just won't have as much volume to sustain it's own thread. As they say in Australian classics, I'll see you 'round like a rissole. Point Five, Harry Lime, Beige and 1 other 2
