Best of 2013 - It Begins

I focused a bit this year and went for a few pieces that I really wanted. Each piece has some sentimental value which makes it that much better!!!

1. I dreamed of getting a killer Adam Hughes piece and was very lucky indeed.

2. I always thought Magik was great and when Tim mentioned that he had this cover I had to go for it. Just an amazing piece and thanks again Tim for letting me add this to my collection!

Uncanny X-Men #4 Cover

3. How can you be an X-Men fan and not love the work of Byrne/Austin. I was very lucky this year to get an epic splash. Thanks again to Simon and Joe and everyone else that was part of the process.

Uncanny X-Men #114 Page 31 Splash - Savage Land

4. I brought my girls to NYCC this year and they both got the bug. We all loved the work of J. Scott Campbell and acquired TinkerBell. Thanks Scott and Cory!!

Wishing everyone a great 2014!!!

Ray,

Love the Overstreet cover and the UXM splash. That splash is one of the most memorable moments of the run!

Thanks again to Brian and Bill!

In 2013 I actually turned over my entire collection and essentially started over trying to focus on the best representative pieces I could find from a more focused group of my very favourite artists (Neal Adams, John Byrne, Frank Miller, George Perez, BWS, Bernie Wrightson, amongst a few others) as opposed to frankly trying to keep up with the Joneses. I am exceptionally happy with how things turned out as I have managed to cross off almost all of the must-haves on my art collecting checklist (in case you are wondering, I still need A-level Miller DD, Frazetta Comet daily, Neal Adams X-men, Byrne Man of Steel and Iron Fist, and Mignola Hellboy).

Here is the link to my Lowry for 2013:

http://www.comicartfans.com/MyLowry.asp?GSub=478

The pieces included are:

X-men #133 page - BYRNE and AUSTIN Wolverine v Hellfire Club

Batman #251 page - NEAL ADAMS Classic Joker Issue

Swamp Thing #5 page - BERNIE WRIGHTSON 1st Regeneration

Green Lantern #87 splash page - NEAL ADAMS Green Arrow pencils

Weapon X Chapter 8 splash page - BARRY WINDSOR-SMITH 1st Lab-Wired Wolvie

As always, thanks for looking! Happy collecting :)

Woah! Those are some key examples right there! Love 'em all!

First, thanks to Bill and Brian for annually putting this “best of” together. I really enjoy seeing all of the great pieces that I somehow missed during the year. I say “somehow”, because it seems like I’m looking at CAF every day, and it’s hard to believe that I miss as much as I do. Second, thanks to my friends that have helped and provided advice and wisdom during this past amazing art year.

My top 5 for this year filled some holes in my collection. This year was an unusually strong collecting year for me. I was able to find some pieces that really illustrate the history of comics; from EC to the Marvel Age to the high points of the 80’s, and re-acquire a piece I owned 30 years ago. A special year to be sure.

My top 5 are as follows:

Covers:

Watchmen #4 – Just a great cover from quite possibly one of the most well-known mini-series (and now collected into a graphic novel) of our times. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=19975

X Men Annual #5 – A classic from the 80’s, and a personal favorite. Took me 30 years to bring this back home. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=20789

Splashes:

Amazing Spider-Man #12, page 1 Yep, #12, as in Steve Ditko. A great example from where it all began!! Link: http://cafurl.com?i=20786

Atom Bomb, splash Wally Wood at the height of his incredible EC run. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=20788

Interior Page:

Killing Joke, page 38 - A page from one of the most amazing stories of the 80’s, featuring Batman and Commissioner Gordon!!! Link: http://cafurl.com?i=20787

As I said, it’s been an amazing year. Here is a link to the whole Lowry gallery: http://cafurl.com?i=11208

Anytime you struggle to find your “best 5”, and are forced to leave Kirby, Ditko, Romita, Will Eisner, Frank Miller, Wally Wood and Neal Adams off the list, you know it’s been a crazy good year!

Not Making the Cut (ouch!):

John Romita – A splash from DD #15. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=20790

From Steve Ditko, the splash to Tales to Astonish #60, the beginning of The Incredible Hulk’s incredible run. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=19424

Cover to Two Fisted Tales by the incomparable Wally Wood. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=20623

Miller’s Dark Knight Returns – the famous broken pearls scene. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=20651

A Contract with God. A key page from Will Eisner’s landmark story!! Link: http://cafurl.com?i=20791

Neal Adams – Superman vs. Muhammad Ali. Link: http://cafurl.com?i=19974

Again, thanks to Bill and Brian for putting this together.

Mine isn't anywhere near as impressive as what some folks here have, but I'd classify it as a good year for me.

Daredevil #1, Page 1 from the Waid/Rivera re-launch of the title. Overjoyed to have it in my collection.

Secret Warriors, Issue #24 page 22 and Issue #27, page 7. Two of the highlight splash pages in the series for me.

Mind MGMT Issue 7 Page 1. Just loved this panel page while chatting with Matt at HeroesCon while he was setting a copy of Red Handed on fire in front of me. So had to pick it up.

Shade pages 2 and 3 from issue 3. Really enjoyed Hamner's work on the early part of the recent Shade miniseries.

If I've done all this correctly, you can see some pictures here:

so out of interest...how do you vote?

On Jan 20th no more art can be added and the voting can begin.

For each category you can place three votes for your favorite pieces.Be aware that once you cast your votes for that category you are done. No changing, no going back. If you only vote for two pieces you can't go back an add a third. Once the voting closes they are tallied and posted (somewhere).

For now we can all just enjoy the latest postings :cloud9:

When the time approaches, the instructions will be provided both here and on the Yahoo comicart-l.

The gist of it is there's a link provided where you can vote for items in each category. You will be able to see all the items quite easily.

In short, it's painless.
