Both staples chewed through, yet cover attached...

Can someone more experienced at grading explain the physics of the golden age phenomenon where by all accounts the cover should not be attached since either the only staole or both staples appear to have ripped but cover remains firm. It should be noted this is natural and not acheived with exterior glue.

Seems to me the cover is not detached from the staples or there is glue of some sort. (shrug)

p.s.

I failed to consider magic.

That would be my guess. A lot of GA books have glue. It must have been widely used by dealers at some point. Maybe it's applied subtly enough as to be difficult to detect.

Maybe somebody carefully reattached the loose cover to the staples. Here's a reader that I experimented on. Notice that there is a tear where the staple pulled thru. I just eased the loose piece back under the staple and it is now attached again without any glue. No magic.

I wonder if CGC would still consider the cover detached on that one?

+1

Kinda like an interference fit. It's not attached, but the tension of the paper holds the staple/book in place.

I don't believe they would.

Glad this is contributing to the knowledge base. Another opinion from a very knowledgeable source is when the fold of the cover is in contact with the interior pages a natural hardening occurs over time creating a cement between the two. Almost like opening and old book to find pages stuck together.

It all depends if it makes it past the page-counter . . . :insane:
