CGC declining to encapsulate a book

22 posts in this topic

I sent some books off to CGC, got them back, and one of the

bunch was returned unslabbed.

There was a sticker on the bag with:

DO NOT ENCAPSULATE

[ ] Too Brittle / Fragile

[ ] Too High / Wide

[ ] Too Thick / Small

[ ] Overhang

[ ] Sticky Substance

[ ] Not a comic book

[ ] Does not pass PS

The box for "overhang" was checked on my book. Which I thought

was a little odd since the top front and back cover do overhang the

pages, but only by a small (1/16 inch or less) amount. I've seen more

"overhang" on a LOT of books.

Was just surprised as this was the first book I've had refused.

Anyone else running into books that CGC does not grade?

Excessive overhang seems to be the most common reason for CGC not to encapsulate. Perhaps they are worried about the slabbing process damaging the book. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

same here with the overhang and I think that the well does not accommodate for the irregularity of the overhang so even if escapes damage during the encapsulation process, the moment you stand up the slab or ship it, the pressure on the overhang will force a crease because the book is not immobilized in the well. Nor can it be sufficiently even with those inserts we've seen before.

How long this sticker has been in use by CGC?

Is this sticker a new wrinkle added by CGC? To try and prevent, or avoid a few of the "post slabbing" related flaws that have been brought up recently, or has it been around since early on, and just used more recently?

Either way, I like it.

If it would harm the book to slab it, then dont slab it.

They could just take the money, not say anything, and slab it.

As far as I am aware, CGC has always done this. Believe it or not, I don't think it is in their best interests to deliberately damage a book.

my ASM #21 was sent back ungraded as the cover and first page were stuck together.

all i did upon receiving it was to stick my finger in between the stuck pages and they came apart immediately with no visible sign of any "sticky substance". they even called me ahead of time to let me know that they couldn't/wouldn't grade the book as they didn't want to assume responsibility for separating the pages.

all good as far as i was concerned.......... thumbsup2.gif
