PGM Fantastic Four 5 GRADE IS IN

87 posts in this topic

Besides the top and bottom splits, isn't the spine also missing a sliver in the black between Dr. Doom's and Reed's word balloons?

Are you talking about directly on the spine, or the straight white line (which is part of the picture)? I wouldn't disagree that the spine has its issues.

No, I'm talking about the area to the left of that directly on the spine. It looks like a missing sliver or split.

The gpa difference on a 2.0 and 3.0 is $400

That’s the problem with slabbed books collecting: such a nicely presenting copy should be priced accordingly, not like f*ugly GD range copies we see around…

But honestly, why pay additional money and resubmit? Just keep it as is or deslab it so you can have it handy to read and marvel at, and forget about the poor performance… :D

It has probably been the spine splits plus staining combo – they are very hard on stains, especially if they are evident ones. But 2.0 looks low nonetheless, would have said 3.0 myself.

I hope it wasn’t too costly – personally I would grab a copy like that all day long, as I don’t care about slabbing and technical grades, as long as it presents well as this one! :D

I'm going to keep it and probably re-submit it with my next coupon.

Re-submitting this book would be like asking your ex-girlfriend's sister out . . .

Can you please go troll someone else's thread? Thanks

You're probably right. I like having my personal collection slabbed in the event that I want to sell or trade something later on.

And if I was going to de-slab it, I would still have to tell potential buyers that it was graded a 2.0 by cgc.

It's not a split; I think it's just wear or a chip.

Slabbing… that’s something I would worry if/when selling…

I also think being a 2.0 does not make much difference if you say it’s a deslabbed 2.0 which looks better.

I like deslabbed books which present better than the grade… :cloud9:

I have a #36 which looks like a 9.2 but was graded as a 8.0 probably because of a dust shadow on the back cover…

I've noticed that CGC hammers books hard with structurally deficient spines, beyond spine splits at the top or bottom of the spine. My guess is that they looked at the wear/chip at the center of the spine, together with the spine splits and moisture stains, to arrive at the 2.0 ... having said that I agree it's a harsh grade. I'm late to the thread, but my immediate thought was "3.5". The moisture stains don't bother me too much, they would be consistent with a 3.0 or 3.5 grade.

Did you order the grader notes?

Looking at these scans again and reviewing the spine I can't imagine that there are any spine splits. What I see is just as Josh describes wear and/or chipping. Definitely not uncommon given that the cover is slightly mis-wrapped and the dark ink wraps the edge and would be susceptible to wear and/or chipping.

Maybe send it to that new company that just formed? (shrug)

You mean except for the ones he told us about?

There are 2 spine splits (3/4in on top, 1/2in on bottom).

I'm still debating getting the notes. Last time I bought notes it was on a 5.5 book and there was only 1 comment "Heavy tanning to interior cover." Don't really want to give CGC any more money on this one.

Yes, I was referring to the following enquiry:

I agree with you here. Even when you could get them over the phone for free, they were hardly ever more than Twitter feed. :)

My guess is that if you hold this book open, and look at the spine, light shines through . . . :gossip:

You might see my smiling facecoffeescreen.gif but no light shining through according to Josh!

How you feeling, btw? hm

Well the meds have taken most of the pain away but I still have not gained full use of my left hand. The specialist determined the cause of the problem to be CDDD (Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease) not really a disease, just the signs of aging or sudden impact damage. Mine may have been the latter as I just moved from BC back to Alberta.

Drugs and physiotherapy are recommended unless, as in my case there is a disability that prevents me from living/working normally. In this case surgery is recommended and so the next course of action is a Neurological Surgeon consultation and possibly a nerve conduction test, depending on the surgeons review.

All in all as I said I am certainly not suffering as I was in the early onset, but it's weird not having the use of a hand that you normally had. Makes you appreciate being healthy and gives you a humbling experience for those that are physically challenged.

Peace,

Tim

That would be my concern, especially with the look of the middle spine. If it were just the stains and splits at the top and bottom, I could see it being a 3.0, but books with fragile spines are lucky to get a 2.0 IMHO. Does present well for the grade though.
