I'm guessing he wanted it more comedic than Sony/Marvel wanted it.

 

I have no way to prove this, but my gut tells me the reverse is probably true.

Looks as if Marvel treat their cinematic personnel in the same way they do the people who produce the comics, as basically interchangeable. Incidentally there are one or two real misandrist bigots in that Mary Sue comment thread.

Exactly. The stars (and their agencies) run Hollywood, and Paul Rudd is not exactly known for his action roles. lol

Maybe the director realized how dumb this movie is actually going to be.

I love him as an actor. But I doubt that his involvement means anything other than a chuckle fest.
