I kind of figured it wasn't going to be so great. They should just make them real horror films like the Universal Monsters or Hammer Films versions.

This Tom Cruise Mummy should be called Mission Impossible Mummy.

Here is hoping the Bride Of Frankentein reboot can turn this Dark Universe around like Wonder Woman did to DC.:wishluck:

I can only hope you're right. :wishluck:

What we will most likely get is a resurrected bride out for revenge a la Uma Thurman in Kill Bill...

Sounds like the USA Today critic liked it.

Tom Cruise's freaky 'The Mummy' exudes guilty-pleasure delight

Quote

The Mummy unwraps a surprisingly welcome gift for moviegoers: a film with Tom Cruise being unheroic for a change, a freaky-deaky breakthrough for Sofia Boutella and a satisfyingly nutso beginning to a grand monster revamp.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman, The Mummy (*** out of four; rated PG-13; in theaters nationwide Thursday night) is a tomb full of action-packed guilty pleasure that owns its horror, humor and rampant silliness equally. It also pays faithful homage to its previous namesakes: This Mummy shares a weird romantic bent with the 1932 Boris Karloff classic and is just as adventurous as the more recent Brendan Fraser vehicles, though with less of an Indiana Jones vibe and more in common with The Walking Dead and Shaun of the Dead.

Cruise takes a break from his Jack Reacher and Mission: Impossible good guys to play a full-fledged antihero, and he wears the mantle well as a sexually self-obsessed, greedy jerk. There is a hero’s journey to be had, for sure, but it’s actually more enjoyable to watch Nick get beat up and thrown around by random fiends.

He’s the brawn but Boutella’s mummified villain is the real beauty, a stunning work of creature-feature art with hieroglyphics peppered all over her body. Birds, giant rats and beetles follow her wherever she goes, and Ahmanet doesn’t move like an ancient monster — rather, she saunters gracefully like she’s at Transylvanian Fashion Week, showcasing a deadly confidence.

The Mummy launches the Dark Universe franchise, a reboot of the iconic Universal monsters for whippersnappers who've never seen the classics, and Jekyll leads the Prodigium, an organization built to study and defeat monstrous threats, which serves as the connective thread of these movies. Smartly, they don’t overdo it with setting up more films: Johnny Depp doesn't show up as the Invisible Man (though would we know?) but old-school horror fans might spot some familiar specimens in Jekyll’s laboratory.

Irreverently basking in a certain wacky glory, the new Mummy serves up a scary leading lady and enough bizarre situations to live up to its legendary title.

Interesting. I wasn't expecting that.

Looks like it will be a huge hit overseas!

http://deadline.com/2017/06/tom-cruise-the-mummy-best-global-box-office-opening-of-career-1202109289/

Could ‘The Mummy’ Really Turn Out To Be Tom Cruise’s Biggest Global Opening Of All-Time With $177M?

Currently, industry sources tell us that The Mummy stands to clear $125M-$135Min its overseas release in 63 territories, which when added to its domestic range puts global between $160M$177M. On the high end, that would be a record global opening for Cruise, besting War of the Worlds which posted a traditional global opening of $167.4M (3-day domestic + 5-day foreign; Box Office Mojo’s $203.1M figure rolls in extra domestic days). After War of the Worlds, Cruise’s next best worldwide debut is Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation ($120.5M).

Mummy 21 RT, POTC 29 RT, Baywatch 20 RT, King Arthur 28 RT- w/o GOTG & WW, the Hollywood "summer" would be a critical abomination so far; well, Alien was a decent 70 but it tanked

And at least the early part of the year started off strong for superhero movies.

I'll admit it. I had a chance to see this for free last night. And with all the potential the studio had here with solid actors, an interesting theme (a monster in the universe of a much larger horrorfest), and characters that could have been much more interesting, they crammed so much into this to launch that larger universe at the risk of losing the story you are in. And it was NOT at the fault of Tom Cruise, who does a really good job with what he is given. It's a horribly constructed --script.

They thought to ignore Dracula: Untold and have this be the kick-off point? I'd watch the former more than once before I would bother with this again. Even with the appearance of ...

Spoiler

... Doctor Jekyll this is so off from the history of the character. It turns out Russell Crowe is the head of a secret organization that collects and studies monsters after killing them. His army shows up to save Tom Cruise and his damsel in distress, leading to loads of hints of all the characters we are going to see in the future when they enter his lab. Yet it was so uninteresting the way this gets tossed into your lap.

Deadline hits it right on the heads.

Why ‘The Mummy’ Turned Crummy At The Domestic B.O. & What This Means For Uni’s ‘Dark Universe’

Quote

Some like to point out that Mummy’s failure stems from being an antiquated property paired with an antiquated star, but if you remember, it wasn’t that long ago that both audiences (A-) and critics (93% certified fresh) were having a blast at another Cruise 21-year old franchise, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which opened to $55.5M and held the top spot for two weeks in a row, becoming the second-highest title in the M:I series with $195M domestic.

There are myriad reasons why Mummy isn’t connecting stateside, but as critics and moviegoers concur – it’s just a really bad, messy movie which can’t make up its mind which direction to go in, coupled with a complex mythology centered around a female mummy’s soul that’s entrapped Cruise’s body.

The Mummy should also serve as a warning sign to other major studios: Here’s another example of what can go severely wrong when there’s so much emphasis and stress put upon one movie to launch a franchise, in this case Universal’s monster Dark Universe. Warner Bros. nearly ran into this problem with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them back in October when they ambitiously announced a month before release that the Harry Potter spinoff series would span five titles. Fantastic Beasts put up the lowest opening of any Potter universe title ($74.4M) but wound up being profitable at the end of the day.

Rather than fixating on the story of the moment (a la Wonder Woman as a standalone story ignoring most of its franchise ties), it gets rammed down your throat to the detriment of the story in The Mummy. Oh well!

Angelina Jolie better lean towards that Dark Phoenix role over Universal's Dark Universe. A safer bet!

With that said, hopefully the Bride of Frankenstein reboot will turn it around.

I really love the Universal monster characters and they were the first cinematic universe.

The thing is they were misunderstood monsters that made them so appealing, not super heroes, so let's hope Universal got the message. :wishluck:
