Selling a whole collection - Who to call?

Craiglist ad would be better

selling to comic store might as well give them away

Funny. I own a nice comic store near to this collection and for quality material I will pay 80-90-100+ % of value. Considerably more than 10c on the dollar. Now, for modern runs of west coast avengers that I can't give away, 10c a book is about right (try getting 25c for any quantity) but there are many comic store owners and dealers that will pay a very fair price (thumbs u

If OP can find a dealer like that I'd sell

just make sure you know what the values are-check ebay

I've had dealers pretend a key book was just another book and low ball me

25% of value just be aware if you get $1000 you could have got $4000 just for putting in some packaging/listing time

You can't give it away, but other dealers are paying good money for it? If that's the case, wouldn't a person selling their collection be better off selling everything to them, including the old stuff, instead of to you?

I call hogwash on all of the dealers who are trying to get the Avengers and FF keys without doing any of the heavy lifting.

As someone who sold comics to a shop while I was in college, I agree with Kav. The price I got was 5 dollars a short box, didnt matter what was in them.

...they took the box too. The price of the box ALONE is almost 5 bucks, Ugh.

Of course thats not to say that EVERY comic store would do that, but thats my experience.

The internet and ebay have changed things. Most dealers have to pay more, some still find the people willing to sell for pennies on the dollar. I think it is easier for people to find out what collectibles cost and the fact most people today realize collectible exist and are worth money.

There are many times I pay full FMv for a book because I know I can sell it for FMv+10% or whatever

And as others have stated, with all the resources available to sellers these days, it is very easy to gauge a fair price

Maybe I am the exception to the rule (my store is a hobby to me, it is not an income producer and I don't need it to be)

If I can't sell it, I'm sure there are not too many that can either. It's all supply and demand. And while region comes into play, demand is pretty universal for the good stuff, and pretty weak for the hard to move stuff

So my statement is that i can almost guarantee I (new force comics in Florida) pay more than virtually any shop I know of because I am willing to pay stronger for good material and will pay the same "bulk" price for the "drek".

When folks bring quality material into my store , my buying method is to show them what the book sells for (eBay , clink etc) and then i generally offer them 80-90% of realistic sling price

Why? Because as I tell them, why would they sell to me when they can net 80-90% selling it themselves or shipping to clink to sell. I recently paid a mother and daughter $450 for a $500 copy of hulk 181. They had stopped in the other store on way into town and he had offered them 120. They had looked online and were "hopefull" to get 200

So, all I'm saying is don't lump everyone together. There are many good and fair stores out there (as I'm sure there are those that are not). Due diligence is key (thumbs u

Kav, it's reasonable to think our online dealer friends are paying 100% of the current value. Who do you think is fueling the upward spiral on the price of keys? You think collectors alone would've driven X-Men 4 in 5.5 up to $800, or Batman 121 in 3.5 up to $600? Dealers and speculators are buying from each other, and tacking 20% on top of what they paid. When the lower priced copies dry up, the bloated price becomes the new asking price, even though it's still the same books out for sale.

I don't dispute that you pay top dollar for keys, but first you said you didn't want the drek because this mythical "modern age specialist" would happily pay more. When I suggest you're not the guy to move this collection to, now you're paying the same price for drek as everyone else? Those are some fancy dance steps, friend, but I think experienced comic people can see through the salesmanship. (thumbs u

My guess is no one is paying 100% of any $50 book. But high demand books, you bet folks are. I've advertised right here on the cgc boards that I would pay 100% avg FMv on certain books (ih181, af15, etc). That's "quality" material. Avengers 87 in g/vg is not a book I know anyone pays 100% of asking price (most collectors want a 20-50% discount on that type of material).

I had to sell my (much larger) collection earlier this month, and I agree with the advice I received here - do _not_ break up the Silver & Modern comics.

As was said, everyone wants the same books, and if you just sell the Silver you'll be left with kindling -- modern books no one will touch for more than $.10 apiece. Better to move it all at once.

Also, don't be afraid to advertise the whole collection on Craigslist. Area dealer/boardies will see the ad and be in touch. I'd also show the collection to at least three prospective buyers so you have a realistic gauge of value before you take an offer.

Sorry I never said any modern specialist would pay more. You might want to get your facts straight (thumbs u
