Selling a whole collection - Who to call?

69 posts in this topic

Ditto - I'm grateful to both Gator and Thirdgreenham for stepping in and buying some of my better books for fair prices when I really needed the money a year and a half ago.

Gator bought my copies of Showcase # 4 and X-Men # 1, among others, at close to--if not dead on--FMV -- and without the wait required by eBay or Comiclink. I'd absolutely sell to him again if opportunity arose...

Andy is always buying my books! Hes the man! (worship) (thumbs u

A few folks that were at the Tampa con last year know this story. I didn't have a good show for whatever reason. A young man, probably 12 was looking at a whiz 5 i had stickered at $800. He thought it was $300 and dragged his dad over to buy it. He was so excited (12 yr old shazam fans are awesome... I was a 12 year old shazam fan in the mid 70s, so I could certainly relate)

When his dad saw the 800 he told his son they couldn't buy it. At this time I was unaware the boy thought my 8 looked like a 3. Once I discovered this, that 12 yr old boy went home with that whiz 5....@300 (all he was allowed to spend). I still hear from him a year later, telling me how he's saved up all year to buy another comic from me this year. That's what it's all about to me.

This is why of the reasons I'm glad to have you as my LCS. If G.A.Tor is giving advice you can trust it to be honest.

Now his choices in football teams. That's another topic. :baiting:

Dear OP...

There's an excellent chance you have some nice value there. Unfortunately, the collectibles market is a sea of sharks, and letting people know you are looking to sell quickly is merely chumming the water.

Not all dealers are bad though, and you should consider yourself very fortunate to have stumbled upon Gator, who is not a shark, but a Chief Brody. Anyone can invent a story about doing a favor for some young kid, but the internet is a skeptical place and almost anyone else would be torn to shreds saying that in a forum, but you will notice he is treated here with legitimacy and respect. You can stop looking now, you've found your guy.

Good luck to both parties!

PS highlights of the deal would be nice to see at some point

Great story - you're one in a million, most people wouldn't (or couldn't afford) to do that. Good on you.

Just to clarify, no butthurt here, and no hard feelings towards Gator at all. A lot of people hear about a collection for sale, and out come the claws when all the guy wanted was advice. Apologies if I misunderstood Gator's take on the modern portion of the collection, I was just hoping we'd be more helpful.

The OP wasn't making a veiled offer to sell, I think he came looking for opinions from people in the know. I'm strictly a budget collector, so I'm just another face in the crowd, but what I was hearing wasn't cool. Anyone saying that he should sell to a modern age expert gives the distinct impression that you're trying to game the poor guy. No, Gator never mentioned modern specialists, but no one answered the guy's question either.

No one wants modern drek, we all agree. I would've liked someone to be straight with the OP and say, "you'll get strong offers for X, you'll get offers for Y at a reduced price, and no one will want Z at all. However, I've been able to sell Z-ish material at a given venue for some price per box. That being said, PM incoming..."

That's all. Sorry about the commotion.

as a seller, due diligence is key....guys like Dale Roberts and Columbia Comics are great buyers...I know I was contacted, but hopefully those 2 (and any others) are also in the mix... I have a geographical advantage (I'm 80 miles away) but for the right collection, folks are happy to travel

Wow, this blew up since yesterday..

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for your advice. I've never sold a collection before, and you guys have been awesome in helping me.

I will update with pics (and maybe a few scans) and a more complete list (for the curious and GAtor) by the end of the week.

Also, I knew GAtor was an awesome guy when he sold me that Dr. Strange 9.6 in Atlanta, but after reading that story...wow.
