Variant covers

33 posts in this topic

Whats everyone's thoughts on variant cover comics? while picking up my usuals i get weekly today, my LCS guys threw down a spider-man 2099 # 5 variant and a edge of spider verse # 5 variant.... one had a price of $15 bucks they were asking and the edge of spider verse #5 they were asking $16 bucks. i immediately passed on them...

Now i can't say i never bought a variant because i have, usually # 1 issues. as of lately i have gotten wiser and if the cover is not absolutely WOW to me then im not spending. really i think its highway robbery, im sure some people will spend the extra loot for this "special cover". i wouldn't mind spending a extra buck or two on the cover price but not $15 -20 dollars... hell no

Also i wonder why DC variants are sold for cover price, yet the Marvel variant are sold for outrageous prices. why is that ?

I'd like to hear all your thoughts on this. do you buy them or not?

I buy all of the Batman variants, but I do it for the registry set. My LCS does not up charge me like several of the other shops around Dallas.

Now answer me this, that is if you know. Why are DC variants always sold for cover price? for some reason my LCS charges out the for a marvel variant. from say anywhere from $12 to $20 bucks. i can understand buying a variant for a #1 issue. some are considered HOT and the one you MUST have. I have experienced at least 3 times as of now, when my LCS has them they show me them immediately and expect me to jump on them. i just can't justify it especially if im buying the regular cover version and its just a different cover.

I collect variants and ya, it can be pricey. However, I only collect variants for books that are either doing really well on the market i.e. Wytches, Enormous, Batman, etc. OR for books I want to be subbed SS. I think having a sig on a book is nicer on a really sweet cover. I find most standard covers are just, meh, but the variants can be really nice!!!

Currently, most DC variants (monster, selfie, etc) can be ordered just like the regular cover, so they should not be more. The Marvel variants are 1:10, 1:25, etc, so they are not as plentiful.

A picture of the true modern collector. It'll be a shame to see you leave the hobby in a year or two when the price of your stuff tanks... :(

1 - diversify

2 - spend less than what you have. Don't borrow or buy on credit

Where in Dallas do you go? I usually hit up some spots in Duncanville and Arlington and occasionally I can't find the variants I really want.

Some variants are great wall hangers, or just nice to have to complete a full run.

Then you have some that immediately increase in value. I'm thinking Deadpool #34 3D variant, which was a 1:52, where you could buy it between cover to $20 and immediately flip it for $50 on ebay.

Some take longer to appreciate, may not appreciate at all, or may slump in value.

But that is true of any comic book.

They still tend to be cheaper than hard-covers or GNs upon release. 2c

I used to chase all of the Amazing Spiderman ones down, but now that I have a complete ASM run I haven't bought a modern since Amazing Spidey 700.Frankly I'm not really missing them.

You have a full spidey run with all variants ? Including 606 JSC sketch/UPC, all 100+ 666's, the 667 dell'otto, the 678 VenoMJ, etc.?

Damn, impressive oakman. (worship)

:hi: howdy from a fellow DFW boardie!

Duncanville is technically my home LCS since I live in the Mansfield area but they are mess for variants. I usually hit Boomerang in Lewisville, Gen X in Bedford orTitan Comics off of 635 in Dallas. Titan and Gen X overprice but have availability especially with con books. Boomerang usually orders variants and has them below inflated prices; often at cost.

i've been to only one other shop that had tons of variants for both marvel and DC. they also sold most of them for cover price. i recall right i got into the comics is when Marvel just started all the series over. and there was about 3 to 4 variants for the new ghost rider, silver surfer, wolverine etc..

once again i have bought a few #1 variant covers, and sometimes i don't mind them. some of the variant covers actually look a hell of alot better then the standard cover. but sometimes for the price my LCS is charging..... i just pass on them as of recently

I would never pay extra for a special cover.

In fact, if a comic even offers variants that's a nearly surefire sign that it isn't actually any good. If it offers variants every single issue, or more than one or two variants on the first issue, the odds are also heavily stacked against it being readable.
