1st Annual Shock Pop Comicon in Ft. Lauderdale. Ever hear of it?

25 posts in this topic

Hey there,

I was informed yesterday about a new comicon coming to South Florida and was curious if anyone has ever heard of this?

It appears to be brand new. At first I thought it was tied to Wizard World because of all the pop culture guests they are having but it doesn't seem to be.

Anyone know?

Seems interesting but I don't see many comic dealers so far...

Looks to be new. Steven & John Heller?

The guests looks like "autograph show" booking agent stuff you see around the nation. Celebs doing the circuit.

Thanks. These cons are popping up all over the place.

It'd be interesting if someone here weighed in on what it takes to produce a show. Find investors, secure a space, work a deal with a national booking agent...

And how attractive are they for profit-making?

I'm thinking new shows like these are less a reflection of "Pop Culture" and more a reflection of "Social Media". Everyone is "a brand" these days and anyone can develop fans/followers. imho. 2c

I actually know Supercon Mike Broder who runs the Florida Supercon show. I should call him and get the scoop. He is a member here but doesn't post much.

I'd imagine he isn't too happy about this show coming in but then again FSC is in July.

I know he spends all year round getting FSC lined up and worked out. It has to be a big job and require a lot of time.

It's very difficult and very risky. I along with TupennyConan run the Tampa Bay Comic Con and Indiana Comic Con. The financial success of a show is all based attendees showing up. Booth sales and any other revenue generator are usually only a very small percentage and nowhere near enough to keep a promoter afloat if attendees don't show. A weekend of bad weather can put a convention out of business.

Booking talent is very, very difficult and very expensive. In my opinion, it's the single most difficult aspect of the business.

I can't add anything on what it takes to run a show, but you can see Wizard World's profitability for 1H14 and full year 2013 here:

This new convention has a lot of talent it seems (ralph machio, the other karate kid people, 3 brady's, Elvira, Freddy Kruger guy, etc). Seems like a lot of talent for a brand new show. ( I should say older vintage talent)

What do you think? Especially because you are in Florida and know the scene.

Thanks

That's exactly what it looks like. Seems odd to me that these kinds of things can draw a crowd. I have gone to car shows where celebs would be there, Henry Winkler, the kid from The Munsters, people like that. I wouldn't wait in a line six people deep for that though. What do I want them to sign?

So to pay to attend a show of nothing but that? Nah. And I am only familiar with three people mentioned. Elvira, the Freddy guy, and John Waters, who I see you have to pay $75 to meet.

I'm right there with you. There are a few artists that will be there that are good but again not enough to get me to attend.

I've just signed up for an account to let you all know, Broder had a meltdown on the floor of ShockPopCC and had to be escorted out by security. He began to yell and harass the vendors attending the show, claiming any attending SPCC will be banned from his own venues. Someone was taking video, and it will be hosted online soon.

I just got back from this show (was there today from about noon to 3) and didnt see this. A lot of the vendors are the same guys who do Mike's shows so It would be a shame if this happened.

As a fan/buyer, I wish there were more opportunities in my area to meet guests and buy comics/merchandise so I wish it had done better with attendance. Presidents day weekend has 2 other huge events in South Florida (Boat Show and Arts Festival) along with Valentines Day made this a rough weekend for a new show IMO. Speaking to at least one pretty big name media guest, I was told it was the slowest show he had ever done.

From a comic standpoint, there wasn't much to see at the show. I didnt pick up a single book.

Cute story... Not even remotely true... But cute

The fact is me and some friends went to check out the mis represented Biggest show in the history of South Florida. I'm pretty hard to miss, so I stick out like a sore thumb, especially in such a dead room. I did talk to vendors and artists I know, and I did tell them it was a waste of their time. I don't think anyone would disagree with me.

Did I ban anyone? Absolutely not... I dare anyone to find one vendor or exhib I told they couldn't pay for space at my show.

It was during a chat with a friend at a booth that six cops came up to ask me to leave, as I was not wanted there by the promoters. The same promoters I may add that came to our event last month to flyer our parking lot.

But... Hey, I'm glad that my appearance was the biggest news to come out of the show. I mean... There really wasn't much else to talk about, was there?

Oh... If anyone doubts me... I have some really good friends who were set up there... Jeff Dekal, Jose Delbo, Greg Kirkpatrick, Tony at Convention Exclusive, Vinnie Tartamella, etc.. Ask them if they're banned from my show, or if I had this imaginary meltdown.

Sad that the promoters are more worried about me being there than actually working to provide customers for their vendors and guests.
