"This Score Needs Fixing" Thread

This is the place to request that scores in the CGC Registry competitive sets be evaluated. You may have slight disagreements with scores, but some of those slight disagreements just boil down to a judgment call. What we're looking for here are clearly incorrect scoring examples. Please provide links, sales histories or any other data that may be helpful in making the appropriate changes to the score.

If the score simply has a “0” your request should go in the Set Expansion Thread or PM me.

Here is the list we are working on. Anything posted after these is going to be added to the next list which will be posted once this one is completed. Please be patient!

I know this is a huge request but is it possible to have a look at Variant cover scores in general? The regular covers are much easier and cheaper to get. They are in abundance since retailers have to order sometimes up to 500 as with the Death of Wolverines in order to make it to get a single variant. So with some examples I've seen already occur could we possibly look at making regular covers especially with moderns the lowly 24 - 32, and then place the variants 32 up to 48?

Hi:

Set: Justice League

Issue: random score fluctuations

Request: to standardize the scores for this set

Here's the details: the Justice League scores (I'll just use the scores in 9.8 as examples) seem to bounce back and forth randomly between 25 pts. and 32 pts. Here's the breakdown:

issues up to #41 score (in 9.8) a 32 or higher (the higher ones being the very earliest issues); THEN,

issues 42-60 drop inexplicably to a score of 25 pts.; THEN,

61-63 back to 32 pts., THEN 64-68, back to 25 pts. (note that #69-71 score higher due to Death of Superman storyline -- nothing wrong with that), THEN,

issues from #72 on, back to 25 pts (lots of these are actually unscored, as none are yet graded). The Annuals all score at 32 in 9.8.

There's no rationale for the random score drops, as those that score 25 don't differ from those that score 32.

I'm asking for the scores now at 25 (in 9.8) to be standardized at 32.

Thanks!

Hi Gemma.

You did an overall good job on the pre-robin tec scores however I feel the Tec 35 scores could still merit a further increase (3X current scores would be a just correction IMO).

Many outspoken GA collectors have long argumented that Tec 35 has surpassed Tec 33 to take up 4th place as most important/desirable Detective Comics issue (only behind 27,29 and 31).

Also, sales for the book in any grade and any condition ( purple and blue ) speak for themselves. So do CGC census numbers with only 1 copy in 8.5, 1 copy in 7.5 and 1 copy in 6.5 universal. There aren't that many in restored condition either.

You simply cannot find a tec 35 anywhere as they disappear the moment they are listed. A 5.0 just sold for 46K on HighGradeComics. It was listed there for less than a week. The lone 6.5 (3rd highest copy) will be auctioned off on ComicConnect this month. Should be fun to watch!

Thank you for your consideration and again keep up the good work !

Regards,

Peter

Hi Gemma,

Can we please take a look at the scores for the Runaways (Complete) set?

Since this set is basically a compilation of other Runways sets (Volume 1, 2, 3) plus a couple of mini-series, and I'd like to see some cross-set consistency in the scores for individual issues.

For example, here are the scores for the Runaways volume 1 set in 9.8 Universal:

#1 = 64 pts., #2 = 32 pts., #3 = 40 pts., #4-18 = 32 pts. each.

You've adjusted the scores for this set in the past and I think the scoring is appropriate with the exception of #1 which I believe is a little low (this issue in 9.8 sells routinely for $250-$300).

These same books are also in the Runaways (Complete) set, but have different scores: #1 = 32 pts, #2-13 = 24 pts., #14-15 = 32 pts., #17-18 = 24 pts. Ultimately, I'd like to see these same books have equivalent scores in either set.

The scores of the other books in the set are fine for the most part, but there are a few that are off in comparison to the others. In my opinion, 32 points is a good baseline value for the 9.8 Universal issues in this set and for the same issues in the other respective Runaways sets. But as long as "book A" has the same value in "set #1" as it does in "set #2", I'm happy.

Thanks!

I have updated the Complete set as that was an error that should not have happened, but I know there have been some troubles with the upload tool so if you notice any strange scores for labels other than Universal for that set please let me know.

Should I add issue #1 to the list for rescoring consideration?

Thank you for making adjustments to various silver/ bronze Marvels I had asked to be reviewed - I think these revised scores are much more reflective of the current market , scarcity and demand for these particular issues.

I appreciate that you are working on quite a comprehensive list of books that fellow collectors have asked to be reviewed but, as and when you get opportunity, I'd be grateful if you could add the following books and recommendations to your list for points review:

Fantastic Four # 31 - very scarce in high grade - last 9.4 sale on GPA is $4101 - suggest this book is tripled in points value.

Fantastic Four #37 - again, incredibly tough in top grade as is reflected in census, recent sales on various auction sites suggest that book should be doubled in points value.

Fantastic Four #50 - a key book and by far the scarcest of the Galactus Trilogy in grade. Tough brown cover and scarcity is reflected in the census. Book could easily be increased in points value by 50% to reflect GPA and current prices on eBay and other auction sites.

Fantastic Four #51 - again very scarce in grade and invariably figures in any top five of silver age stories. Shows up very rarely for sale in grade and always commands prices above guide- recommend double in points value.

Marvel Premiere #47 - long overdue a review in light of interest in Ant Man - quadruple in value at least.

Marvel Presents #3 - okay Guardians are cooling down a bit after great film debut in the summer. Nevertheless, this first appearance in own continuing series is enormously under valued in light of ongoing market demand - recommend this is doubled in value at least.

Strange Tales #180 - similarly this is cooling off a little but still a key book in the much lauded Starlin run and first appearance of Gamora. Absolutely great stuff and easily stands the test of time - recommend that it is doubled in points value.

Thanks for considering Gemma and very happy to provide further analysis if you wish.

Set: The Question (1987)

Request: Normalize scores

Details: Hi. I'm asking that the scores for this series be raised a bit, from (in 9.8) 24 to at least 32, putting it more on a par with its contemporaries -- the 1990s era Green Lantern, for example, among many others.

As it is now, this cutting-edge series, now 25 years old, authored by the legendary Denny O'Neil with many covers by the great Bill Sienkiewicz, scores the same as any random comic from 2014.

The scores for this series need to be bumped up, to at least 32.

Thanks!

JM

Hello,

I would like to see the points awarded to Amazing Spider-Man issue number 121 raised based on the substantial and sustained, for approximately over two years, general increase in sale prices achieved for CGC graded copies of this comic book.

A review of the sale prices for CGC graded copies of this book include:

eBay Sales (Prices are rounded):

Grade 9.2; Sale Date September 18, 2014; Sale Price $805; Serial # 1200406001

Grade 9.2; Sale Date November November 14, 2014; Sale Price $700; Serial # 1250484002

Grade 9.2; Sale Date November 18, 2014; Sale Price $750; Serial # 0236013002

Grade 9.4; Sale Date September 10, 2014; Sale Price $1,099; Serial # 0201324007

Grade 9.4; Sale Date October 30, 2014; Sale Price $997; Serial # 0236871002

Grade 9.4; Sale Date November 17, 2014; Sale Price $950; Serial # 0237647006

Grade 9.6; Sale Date October 8, 2014; Sale Price $1,150; Serial # 1201431001

Grade 9.6; Sale Date October 12, 2014; Sale Price $1153; Serial # 1162408007

[Grade 9.8; Sale Date October 5, 2014; Sale Price $2,999; Serial # 1169913002]

Dealer Sales (Prices are rounded)

Grade; Sale Price; Serial #

9.4; $925; 1254853003

9.4; $975; 1200612001

9.4; $950; 1130741001

Grade; Sale Price; Serial #

9.6; $1351; 1213365014

9.6; $1350; 1027640001

Grade; Sale Date; Sale Price; Serial #

9.6; June 6, 2010; $956; 1012700001

9.6; February 25, 2011; $1016; 1031976001 Savannah Pedigree

9.6; February 19, 2012; $896; 0915743013

9.6; July 22, 2012; $956; 0976047001

9.6; February 22, 2014; $1673; 1198681002 Don/Maggie Thompson Collection

9.6; October 5, 2014; $1315; 1290112004

Although Amazing Spider-Man 121 is not rare in grade with, for example, 40 9.8 CGC graded copies on the census as of 11/25/2014, nevertheless, since the sale prices for this comic book are continually higher in the same grades than those of, for example, Amazing Spider-Man issue 122, I request that the point awarded for this Amazing Spider-Man 121 increase by 35 percent (e.g., 9.4 copy increase from 750 points to 1013 points). Further, I also recall that the points previously awarded to this comic book were substantially higher; perhaps it may time to reconsider, to some extent, that reduction of points.

Based on the trend of future sale prices for this issue the awarded points may have to be revised upward or downward.

Thank you for your consideration and please let me know if you would like me to provide further sales data.

Happy holidays.

(Edit on Nov 28, 2014: added the term "Serial #" to one entry)

Hiya

In The Maxx set, the wizard 1/2 red and blues are misrepresented IMO.

Only 10 books(copies) of each colour were ever produced. I think that should be taken into consideration. These are extremely rare test prints

Hi- I wanted to request score changes for 1 Golden Age and 2 key Modern Age books; please consider:

A. Golden Age:

Detective Comics #68

(1st Two-Face cover)

In the past few weeks,

CGC 8.5 sold for $9,560 on Heritage

CGC 7.0 sold for $2,806 on Comic Link

B. Modern Age:

1. Annihilation Conquest #6

(1st appearance of the New Guardians of the Galaxy lineup: Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot).

CGC 9.8 Universal last sold for $286 on eBay)

2. Guardians of the Galaxy # 1 (2008) 1st issue of the above team in their own title.

(CGC 9.8 Universal last sold for $350, $300 on eBay)

These 2 moderns currently have a score of only 24 in CGC 9.8.

Thanks!

I just added a copy of Adventure Comics 283 to my registry and was rather surprised by the scores for this book. I think that the book should score higher. Here are a few sales from 2014:

Could you add a couple of issues of Thor to the list to review please?

#165 - first full appearance of Him, who would become Warlock. This issues has been strengthening for over twelve months now and shows no sign of abating. Latest 9.4 price on GPA is $1425. This issue could stand tripling in points value, maybe more.

#193 - one of the most difficult and sought after of the Marvel November 1971 52 page issues and a Silver Surfer crossover to boot. Would recommend a 50% points uplift to reflect continuing desirability and the prices it commands when offered for sale.

Thank you for considering.

Brave & the Bold #28 (DONE)

I see you have updated the scores for BB28, thank you. However the increase was nominal, maybe 25%. The new scores are still way under the marketplace. I think a 150% increase is still required.

Example Current 8.0 score is 8,400. Last sale in 8.0 was over 19,000 .

Current 7.5 score is 5,000, last sale is over 13,000 .

Please consider.

Scores can not be based on sales data alone. Yes, the book does very well when it is brought to market but there are other factors as well.

BB28 is a key book as we all know. It is also very hard to obtain in higher grades. The highest graded copy is only a 9.4. No 9.6s and certainly no 9.8s. There are only a little over 500 copies of this book graded to date and competition for ownership is fierce especially in the higher grades.

With the advent of the JLA movie, demand for this book will certainly increase.

Not sure a 250% increase is justified but certainly a re-review of the points allocated.

I would like to throw out there Captain America 359 & 360. They should definitely be worth more than 35pts in 9.8. Both books are cameo and 1st appearance of Crossbones.

Also, New Teen Titans 2, it's Deathstroke 1st appearance and sales average around $500.

Asm 300 needs to be readjusted as well in pts. It has gained and sustained new higher prices.

Gemma,

I think that a few of the Walking Dead issues need score increases. The issues that I'm referring to for consideration are:

Walking Dead #48 (Death of the Governor & a score of other characters)

Walking Dead Governor Special #1 Green Foil Edition (Emerald City Comic Con Variant)

Walking Dead #1 10th Anniversary Edition (Regular & Convention Sketch Editions)

Walking Dead #1 Image Expo (Regular & Sketch Editions)

Walking Dead #1 Escape Edition (Regular & Sketch Editions)

Here is my rationale for each issue.

For Walking Dead #48, the past sales on eBay (that we can see completed sales for) have averaged out to be $197.40. This book should rate higher on the point scale as a reflection of both the sales and the key significance of the issue. In #48 there occurs the death of the first major antagonist of the story as well as the destruction of the town of Woodbury. This turning point is the end to a pivotal arc in the series and this issue continues to be a hot seller.

In my opinion, this issue should have point values earning somewhere around 320 points for a 9.8 universal copy (the same point values assigned to Walking Dead #53 would be a fair reference point as the #48 issue sells for right around or slightly higher than issue 53 does).

Here is the link to past sales on eBay highlighting the recent $225 high sale price & the $145 low sale price edition)

The Walking Dead #48 past eBay sales

For the Walking Dead Governor Special #1 ECCC Edition, I believe the points should be raised to close to what I'm proposing to the #48 issue. All past sales indicate an average end price of $160 (see the below link to the past sales data). Currently it only gets the same point value of the much lesser valued Hastings variant.

Walking Dead Governor Special #1 ECCC Edition recent eBay sales data

For the Walking Dead #1 10th Anniversary Editions, the Walking Dead #1 Image Expo Editions, and the Walking Dead #1 Escape Editions, I believe those should command the same point scales as all the other con exclusives (with a 9.8 being worth 48 points as opposed to the 32). For the most part these all sell at the same prices as the others and for continuity sake should command the same point scales, in my opinion.

For what it's worth there are other Walking Dead issues that should command more points than they currently do but in my opinion it is these issues that need the most important revisions to their point values for the time being.

Thank you for the consideration - I hope that my rationale provides the necessary information for the possibility of their increases. I appreciate all your help with the registry and making this fun for us Walking Dead fans! :)

Ryan
