You're sure the stain isn't from tape that dried up and fell off? Sure has that look. Some people taped the spines of their books even when it wasn't needed.

Nah. The brown is in the same place on each books. Tape would very and would.have started at the bottom and would go all the way to the top. There is actualy a book or two with tape placed over the brown area. That goes to the top and bottom. It was done later.
