Marvel film & TV rights shell game - who owns what?

God forbid some of these studios works together to make a ton more money.

Silver Surfer in Avengers part 3 would make millions of more sense.

I was hoping they would team up for an epic superhero movie.

Hugh Jackman has said he would love to do a crossover movie with Fox & Marvel/Disney.

After playing LEGO Marvel Super Heroes,I want to see a crossover movie more & more.

Fanboys want it,audiences want it,why can't Fox get their heads out of their asses and work with Marvel/Disney & Sony?

Sony Pictures is more willing to do it (they haven't done well this year)

I guess I should add a few to the Marvel side of things since those are clear now too.

Skrull movie rights

Marvel President Kevin Feige: Yes, Skrulls have a big connection to Fantastic Four. So there are some contractual limitations about who can do what when it comes to Skrulls. Though that is not why we didn’t do Skrulls. There is already enough going on in this movie.

Does not Elektra do with Daredevil?

There is confusion at the Marvel executive level who actually has control of Elektra's film rights. At one point the head of Marvel Studios thought it was their property. But I guess someone in Legal clarified things.

I know. Marvel really got itself in a pickle with the bankruptcy and dividing up all these movie rights.

But it slowly cleans itself up over time. Hopefully this is one of those that sorts itself out. I'd like to see a well-done Elektra/Daredevil movie.

Never thought of this one.

Cable_Neeson.jpg

Cable / Stryfe – Liam Neeson: Some people might argue Neeson is too old, but Cable was originally an older character that was de-aged unofficially by artists to look more youthful and capable… but he’s not. He’s a seasoned warrior who’s seen it all and done it all, and Liam Neeson could show that with aplomb. Forgiven the more comedic aspects of A-Team and bring in his hard edge from Taken and you’ve got the ingredients for a riveting portrayal of the prodigal son of the X-Men. And don’t forget, Neeson would also play Cable’s chief antagonist Stryfe as well.

What they need to do is find a younger guy, that they could age, instead of an old guy who is going to do a couple of movies and then be too old.

Exactly.

Case in point. Great actor, but stupid casting as Magneto.

It appears Fox owns the Elektra and associated characters movie rights.

Fox Reportedly Gets To Keep The Rights To ELEKTRA (May 9, 2013)

:bump:

Well thats a clusterfuc .. How can you make an EleKtra film without mentioning Daredevil

What was Elektra's first appearance? I'm sure there are at least 170 issues that she didn't appear in.

I still think it would have been great if Uatu had shown up at the end of the first Fantastic Four movie (maybe at the end). . . "Reed Richards, we have something to discuss. The end of your world!" Or something like that. . .

Marvel should bite the bullet and get X-men and Spider-man back.

FF is not a high priority as the book hasn't been popular in a very very long time. SS and Galactus though would make it worth it.

It will take a lot of cash, but it would be worth it.

I'd like to ask a basic question. All of these characters are Marvel created. So what happened? How did Fox and others grab the rights away from Marvel? Did Marvel just have a firesale and piece meal characters for cash?

Marvel Studios as the film production entity that we now know didn't really get started until 2004. They borrowed like half a billion dollars (seriously) from Merrill Lynch to start putting the first several films into motion that they could do completely on their own. Iron Man I was the first true Marvel Studios / "Marvel Cinematic Universe" film.

Before then, it was SOP to sell film options to other movie studios or otherwise take on production partners (which is how everybody else in comics besides WB still does it), and many of the previous deals are still in place.

And yeah, the Marvel bankruptcy messed things up for awhile. The Sony Spider-Man franchise was delayed by that for quite some time.

So the 1990s greed of the comic book speculator and Ronald Perelman really is still costing Marvel long-term.

Not really. As annoying as it is for us fans to see these characters screwed with by Sony and Fox, had it not been for those two studios making hugely successful X-Men and Spider-Man movies then Marvel studios would not exist, they would have never gotten the loan to make Iron Man and Hulk in 2008 and Disney probably wouldn't have bought them. It's a catch-22.

Marvel still get paid a percentage of gross on the movies made by other studios as well so it's not just a one of payment in the 90s.
