RUMOR: Marvel Regains FANTASTIC FOUR Rights; First Movie Due Out In 2020

Could we finally see the Fantastic Four back under the Marvel Studios umbrella? That's what Den Of Geek is reporting, anyway. According to them the deal is done, and in exchange for Fox being allowed to develop the Legion and Hellfire TV shows, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Thing, The Human Torch - and presumably all characters associated with them - will return home.

This probably isn't that surprising given the critical and commercial disaster that Josh Trank's recent reboot became - but Fox did seem adamant that they were going ahead with a sequel, so perhaps they were just trying to throw people off the scent. DOG reckon this deal has been in the works for a while now.

And here is the Den of Geeks exclusive article.

FANTASTIC FOUR back at Marvel, movie planned for 2020?

According to our source, Fox were given the TV rights for X-Men in exchange for Fantastic Four. The deal's been in the works for some time, we're told, and further, the timing of Marvel's recent announcement of its movie slate leading up to the year 2020 and the X-Men TV series is no coincidence.

You may remember that there are three, so-far untitled films on Marvel's schedule in five years' time. We're told that one of those films is a Fantastic Four movie.

We don't have an independent source to back this claim up, so we'll have to treat it with a certain amount of caution for now. But given the reception Fantastic Four received earlier this summer, it makes sense that Fox would be receptive to the idea of a deal with Marvel, particularly if it meant wresting something as major and lucrative as the X-Men TV rights from Marvel's grasp.

And one of the article comments hits home with the real value win here.

Getting Silver Surfer, Dr. Doom and Galactus back in time for Infinity War would be ideal!

Good point.

I think this makes it official.

OFFICIAL: Fantastic Four Film Rights Remain At Fox

20th Century Fox has confirmed to ComicBook.com that the film rights to the Fantastic Four remain at the studio, despite rumors to the contrary.

The rumors followed yesterday’s announcement that two X-Men television pilots were being developed for Fox networks as a co-production between Fox Television and Marvel Television. The rumors implied that the Fantastic Four rights were traded to Marvel in exchange for the X-Men’s television rights. The rumor went on to suggest that one of Marvel Studios’ recently announced, but still untitled, 2020 films would be a new Fantastic Four film.

The rumor was flawed to begin with. The X-Men television rights have rested at Fox for years already, so no trade was necessary, and the deal to bring the X-Men to television has been in the works since well before the Fantastic Four’s most recent box office disappointment. Transferring rights would also be a much more involved process than simply “trading” one for another, as rights arrangements such as the Fantastic Four’s usually involve hundreds of legal document pages and a similar number of characters, both formally listed and implied. Finally, Marvel Studios and Marvel Television are two separate entities within the larger Disney Corporation, so it is possible that Marvel Studios had no active involvement in the X-Men television deal.

And especially since Entertainment Weekly reached out to Marvel and was told the story is false.

Fox And Marvel Refute Today's FANTASTIC FOUR Rumor

Almost immediately after the rumor that Marvel had regained the rights to Fantastic Four hit the net, other outlets began to deny it per their sources at the studios. Now while that doesn't really mean a whole lot as studio denial is common with any rumor like this, EW's Anthony Breznican has reached out to his trusted sources and they've 100% confirmed: the rights to the Fantastic Four remain at Fox.

Since this show has been rumored for a long while, nice to see there is something coming together.

Fox Orders Pilot of Marvel X-Men Based TV Series

Marvel TV and 20th Century Fox will team up for a new X-Men based pilot on FOX. The series, untitled and without any specific characters mentioned in the announcement, will be an "action-adventure" with two human parents whose child develops mutant powers. "Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive," the press release reads.

The series is a joint production between the two companies, with Fox's Bryan Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, and Matt Nix joining Marvel's Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory as the production staff. Nix (Burn Notice, APB) will lead creative production.

"Developing a Marvel property has been a top priority for the network--and we are so pleased with how Matt Nix has led us into this thrilling universe,” said David Madden, president, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company in the release. “There’s comic book adventure, emotional and complicated relationships, and a rich, existing mythology from which to draw. With the brilliant production crew behind this project, it has all the makings of a big, fun and exciting new series."

Marvel's head of television, Jeph Loeb, who will be producing the series, said, "Marvel Television is thrilled to be co-producing with 20th Century Fox Television on our first project. Matt's a huge fan of X-Men and his take on the X-Men universe, with its rich characters and high-stakes adventure, is exactly the show we want on FOX. It's a great team of creative producers who will be making something entirely unique."

Additional details based on this announcement.

FOX Gives Pilot Order for New X-Men TV Series

It was previously announced that FOX and Marvel were in negotiations to develop a Hellfire TV series, based on the infamous villain group from the X-Men canon, but Variety reports that the Hellfire series is no longer moving forward.

Marvel's Jeph Loeb Is Definitely Excited About FOX's X-Men Series

Speaking with IGN at this year’s TV Critics’ Association press tour, Loeb said, “As an X-Men fan, and ultimately, what Matt -- the showrunner and creator -- brings to it is that the X-Men are always stories about family. That's where they start, that's where they live. It's about understanding how we deal with each other.”

“It's about parents that don't understand what's wrong with their kids, it's about kids that don't understand their parents. And he understood that. He got it,” he went on to explain.

The untitled series is reportedly replacing the studios’ pursuit of Hellfire considering most of its writers jumped ship for 24. And, so far, it looks like the show will definitely air on FOX at some point. The studio was given a ‘put pilot’ commitment, meaning that FOX will have to pay a hefty penalty should they not green-light the project.

Obviously, Loeb was cagey about revealing much information on the upcoming X-Men series. “We haven't really been able to tell everybody what the whole story is,” he said. “They'll be able to see it, and when they do, it'll be really clear why those characters were chosen, where they are going, and what's going to happen.”

Pretty cool to see Marvel go from 'We don't need mutant characters' to 'Heck yeah - this needs to happen!'

DEADLINE: ‘X-Men’ Drama Nears Pilot Order At Fox

6d3e1b1b3c.jpg

Fox has yet to order its first pilot this January. Among the scripts that are heating up is the action-adventure X-Men series written by Burn Notice creator Matt Nix. Early versions of the -script had been received enthusiastically at Fox as well as producing studios 20th Century Fox TV and Marvel TV. Fox chairman Gary Newman noted to Deadline that he expects the final draft to come in shortly and a pilot pickup within the next week or two. Exploratory casting already is underway, with the process expected to ramp up once the official greenlight comes.

The untitled series, which had a put pilot commitment, focuses on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive. The show appears particularly timely, dealing with the plight of minorities in society.

Nix exec produced with Bryan Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, plus Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.

X-Men TV Series Will Include Sentinels

There has been little word concerning Matt Nix’s upcoming X-Men television series since it was announced in July 2016 until last week. Details are still scarce, but the chairman of Fox did suggest that an official pilot order could be coming within the next few weeks.

Now, 20th Century Fox’s X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner has offered another clue about the mysterious X-Men project. The reveal came while discussing how the new series will be related to the X-Men film series.

“Matt's is much more a part of just the world in terms of there are mutants, mutants are hated and there are Sentinels -- though very different from what we've seen before,” Donner tells IGN. “You feel like you're here in the X-Men world. With Legion, we're our own universe. It gives Noah the freedom to do what he wants to do. Because we play with so many different timelines, and we rebooted and not really rebooted and all that, we felt like, OK, we're going to throw it out there and hope the fans accept it.”

In addition to a sense of what fans should expect in terms of continuity, Shuler also confirmed that the mutant-hunting robots called Sentinels will be a part of the series. The Sentinels are villains that will fit in perfectly with what we know about Nix’s series so far, which is that it will be based on an underground movement of mutants living at a time when of great persecution and prejudice.

Marvel's New X-MEN Family Drama Series Has Been Given A Pilot Order At FOX

148431.jpg

Fox has handed out its first drama pilot order of the season to the mysterious X-Men TV series from Burn Notice creator Matt Nix we heard about recently. The show, which will be co-produced by Marvel Television, will focus on a human couple and their mutant children going on the run and hooking up with "an underground network of mutants."

Though no new information was provided, Nix has previously confirmed that the still untitled show will be set in the "same general universe" as 20th Century Fox's X-Men movies, and will feature appearances from a few well-known characters. Who they'll be remains under wraps of course, but there has been some whispers of The Sentinels being involved, and that underground mutant group sound a lot like The Morlocks to us.

Nix will exec produce the X-Men drama with Bryan Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg, with Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory also on board.

According to THR, former Person of Interest and Angel star Amy Acker has been cast as the female lead in Matt Nix’s X-Men television series. Acker will play Kate Stewart, wife of Stephen Moyer’s character, who is described as "a woman who is struggling with her separation from her husband Reed (Moyer) and her increasingly challenging teenage children. When her family situation takes a dark turn, she finds that she’s stronger than she thinks.”

The show has also added Emma Dumont (Aquarius, Bunheads) as a character that should be familiar to Marvel Comics fans: Lorna Dane/Polaris. This small screen take on the powerful but unstable mutant is said to be a "strong-willed, brave and loyal mutant who has the ability to manipulate magnetism."

Meanwhile, young Night at The Museum actor Percy Hynes White will play Andy, "a sensitive kid and bit of a loner, who keeps to himself to avoid the turmoil he faces at school and at home."

I've been waiting for Fox to finally do something with Polaris.  She's got the same powers as Magneto so she should be pretty damn powerful.

This may turn out to be a bigger hit that people realized. There is a writer that Singer has depended on for a long time to educate him about X-Men characters. So hopefully that is the person guiding him with these decisions and direction.
