MARVEL COMICS

24 posts in this topic

If I ever feel the urge to buy a new Marvel comic, I only have to browse the Diamond "New Release" Listings and the urge will go away. I guess the halcyon days of the 60s and 70s are long gone.

You got it, nothing there I want to read.

ANGELA ASGARDS ASSASSIN?

EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE?

RETURN OF LIVING DEADPOOL?

UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL?

That, plus where's the continuity?

Are they all Earth-616 books?

Without buying every single title, how do I know which book blends into which earth/universe?

I believe that (excluding anything with Ultimate at the front), everything Marvel is publishing is a 616 title at the moment, though I'm not sure about the Return of the Living Deadpool series. That might be a "off in it's own universe" kinda one-off story, but I don't really know.

And the Edge of Spider-Verse is essentially a story built around the idea of universe-hopping like the Exiles series from a number of years back.

That said, I don't blame you. They have dropped a number of classic Marvel staple titles to publish more obscure things in order to appeal to a more diverse (read: female) demographic with offerings of things like the Angela series & Squirrel Girl. I don't mind it, IMO. But I can understand why some people might be thrown off by it.

Like, there's now only 1 Spider-Man monthly but Squirrel Girl has her own series too? WTF? Cool, but weird & different.

Marvel IMO is currently being beaten in story/art by DC, and there are some good independent titles.

If you wanted to read anything Marvel, I would suggest Daredevil, Punisher, and Fantastic Four. The last DD series was not as good as the previous one but I think it will get better. The last Fantastic Four series was pretty good compared to all the other ones. Punisher is a decent read.

If you come across any other good titles let me know.,

I buy some new Marvel books. What I'm mostly annoyed with is the amazing number of variant covers and printings.

DEC148006 ANT-MAN #1 BROOKS SECANT PTG VAR $4.99

NOV148175 EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #2 4TH PTG RODRIGUEZ VAR $3.99

NOV148176 SPIDER-WOMAN #2 2ND PTG LAND VAR SV $3.99

DEC148099 STAR WARS #1 2ND PTG CASSADAY VAR $4.99

NOV148177 SUPERIOR IRON MAN #2 2ND PTG CHOI VAR AXIS $3.99

NOV148178 THANOS VS HULK #1 2ND PTG STARLIN VAR $3.99

NOV148179 THOR #1 4TH PTG DAUTERMAN VAR $3.99

That's seven comics being released that aren't the first printing. That's nuts.

I would have a hard time being a Marvel/DC completionist nowadays.

In the late 80s and early 90s you just bought one issue and read it.

Trying to find and buy all these multiple variants seem to take the fun out of it.

It must work though because there are more variants then ever!

I'm not even trying to be a completest for the modern volumes of the books I collect. I'm good with being a completest for pretty much any series that started before 2010, but since then? Not a chance. (Thankfully, I was never an ASM completest so I don't care about the 9000 variants to ASM 666 or whatever issue it was)

But even trying to knock out my UXM complete run with all the post-2006 variants is a headache.

Well, looking at what was going on in the 60s like

PATSY AND HEDY CAREER GIRLS

MODELING WITH MILLIE

KATHY

KID COLT OUTLAW

There's nothing there I'd really want to read, so to each their own, I guess.

When I was getting back into comics, I read about a lot of titles on Wiki just so I could see where to start. It's like anything, really - if you do a bit of research before diving in, you'll do ok. There's lots of good Marvel titles (and lots of bad ones) that still cater to loosely scripted capes stories (which I like).

Marvel is kicking some serious butt right now.

Star Wars #1 sold over a million copies, Spider-Gwen is already over 200,000 ordered, the Spider-Verse storyline continues to pick up readers, Wolverines is super hot (with new Marvel character Fantomelle), the GOTG/X-Men Black Vortex crossover is starting - Thor and Iron Man are picking up readers - and all of this is just the beginning....

The Avengers movie, Secret Wars this summer in the comics, and then the Ant-Man movie....

Just because you're not reading it, doesn't mean it isn't going on.

As far as DC having better story/art.... well.. there's good and bad at both...

Image has got some great reads.

It had such a great premise. But it built up too long and the payoff wasn't that great.
