Encroaching on your commission theme

40 posts in this topic

You're probably right, though at the same time, I think you answered your own question. If you'd put a great deal of time and money into a theme you may have a better understanding.

You may be right about my understanding, but I don't see what someone else's collection has to do with yours. If I saw three people with the same theme I know I could appreciate all of their art without thinking it minimized any of the other pieces. Just keep enjoying what you've got, you have some wonderful art!

Hmmmm the throne thing is one thing, its not like people haven't had pics of people sat on chairs before.

But If someone else started on something very specific like the OML theme then that would p*ss me off and yeah totally cheapen my comms if it had been my idea.

I am going to commission the Porcelain Throne pieces. Characters on the toilet. Iron Man will of course be face first with liquor bottles scattered around him. I can do drunk Odin too. It will of course be easy to get some female porn images with this theme and should wind up in the most viewed category.

I had thrones first!!

To be 110% honest, your decade-long trophy room theme immediately jumped to mind when I saw McCoy's "iron throne" commissions for the first time this week.

I'm not a commission guy at all, but crying "encroachment" when dealing with licensed properties and a pop culture/tv/book phenomenon is a bit of a stretch.

Sounds awesome. All pieces will be done by Frank Cho, right?

I think Tywin Lanister would be the correct first commission. (Yeah, I'm a GoT fan)

First of all, no one was crying, we're all big boys (or girls) here. Opinions were asked for and received, so for all those who gave them, thank you.

Secondly, the licensed properties issue was addressed in the original post and goes for about every commission out there, no matter what "theme".

Admittedly, I do have one piece very similar to Chris's trophy room theme, but that is where the artist took it when designing his version of the throne.

Look, hind sight being twenty twenty, it's really not a big issue. No one is making mountains out of mole-hills. Though I will say that it was interesting to see where certain collectors fell on the question. Those that do have themes of their own and commission pieces seemed to understand on some level. Those that preface their responses with, I don't do themes or commission pieces, don't get it and seem to think it's ridiculous to fret over in any capacity.

As the rep who handled the commission in question (and who has also handled "Iron Throne" theme commissions in the past), I didn't see any conflict here. If the commissioner had asked for Deadpool on the "Iron Throne", I would have said something. Otherwise, "throne" is fairly generic and fair game as far as I'm concerned.

So, don't worry, no other collectors will be getting "Iron Throne" commissions through me. Some themes are unique and well-established in the hobby, like "One Minute Later" and "Trophy Room", and should be respected. On the other hand, I'd be OK with anyone asking for Batman on a gargoyle, which to me is akin to asking for Silver Surfer on a surfboard-- so basic an idea that no one can rightfully claim ownership. I might suggest Batman on a flagpole to mix it up, but if the commissioner insists on gargoyle, then gargoyle it will be.

Felix, best idea ever. I'm going to commission Trophy Rooms One Minute Later. The first one will be Joker discovering he didn't securely mount Wonder Woman's head only to have come crashing down on his making him spill his drink.

Then we can have Thanos trip over Silver Surfers board.

This is gonna be great!

:sumo: I already laid claim to that theme on Wed Jul 15 2015 @ 01:56 PM :sumo:

I also promised poorly drawn pron, so I'll get the most views

I thought it was weird when I first saw another "Karate Kid vs." commission, but that collector is some I'm friendly with, and it wasn't a matchup that I planned on getting.

BUT, I didn't like seeing the numerous "Karate Kid vs." pieces that showed up on CAF a couple years ago, all from one artist. I mean, I had no right to dislike it happening, but I still did.

I just posted a new One Minute Later today on CAF. My own two cents is I don't much like it when someone tried to commission One Minute Later and put the tag on the art -- I kind of felt that the name "One Minute Later" and tagging that name into the commission belonged to my theme. I certainly have no legal right to it, I admit that fully. I think though that I ought to be able to say that I just don't like it -- that is all.

That said, I did like it and think it neat when Marvel editors let me know they liked my theme so much they were using it on variant covers a few months back -- they did exactly what I do -- they put the original on the cover along with the new version and they used the One Minute Later tag. I guess since it was Marvel I liked it. The editors let the artists know (if they didn't already) about me and I bought several of the variant covers. I still have the Yu to post.
