DC’s upcoming film The Flash has certainly had a tumultuous history. Recently Warner Brothers announced that the film would finally hit theaters July 1, 2022, and that Ezra Miller would indeed reprise his role of the title character. It’s wildly anticipated that the film will follow the Flashpoint storyline from the comics. In an exclusive discussion with That Hashtag Show, director Andrés Muschietti tells us that the film will feature Flashpoint elements, but perhaps not in a way we might think.

Muschietti spoke to us after moderating a cast panel for the upcoming horror/thriller film Underwater.  (Side note: Muschietti also confirmed in the conversation that he is indeed helming a new adaptation of the horror classic The Howling for Netflix) When we asked him what upcoming projects he had on his calendar, he was quick to reference his work on the Flash film. When pressed for details, he simply replied that the movie will present a “different version of Flashpoint than you’re expecting.”

Flash: A different telling of Flashpoint

Fans of the Flash comics will be well versed in the Flashpoint storyline. In the comics, Barry Allen (the Flash) wakes to find that he now exists in an alternate reality. It’s one in which he has no powers and everything, including the death of his own mother, is changed. His mother lives, Thomas Wayne, not Bruce, is Batman, and Atlanteans have sunk and now control most of western Europe. Barry eventually attempts to go back in time to change things back to normal….

The Flashpoint storyline has found its way into an animated film feature (Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox). Elements of it have even trickled into CW’s The Flash series. What Muschietti will do with it, and how it will be a different version than we expect, remains a mystery. If nothing else, he’s at least done his part to spark interest in the film and keep fans wanting for more.

The road to release for Ezra Miller's solo Flash movie has certainly been a long and tumultuous one. After Miller's take on the character appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017's Justice League, Flash was on pace to be one of the next DC heroes with his own feature film. However, several directors and writers and come and gone from the project in the years since, worrying fans that bringing Flash to life might prove too difficult a task. Things seem to finally be on the right track, though, and the current creative team is ready to get Flash up and running.

IT director Andy Muschietti was hired on to helm The Flash, with Bumblebee and Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson penning the -script. This week, at an event promoting Birds of Prey, ComicBook.com's Brandon Davis was on hand to speak with Hodson about The Flash and why now is the right time for her to take on the project.

"Honestly, there's so little I'm allowed to say about Flash," Hodson said. "I will tell you that for me, the reasons to do it now is because I love it. I'm having a blast working on it. And that is about all I'm allowed to say."

Although Hodson does have to keep everything regarding The Flash on the down low, she had no trouble voicing her praise for the collaboration she's experienced with DC and Warner Bros. over the past few years. Before landing the job writing the upcoming Flash movie, Hodson was hired to write a Batgirl screenplay in addition to Birds of Prey, establishing herself as a bit of a DC veteran by now. What you may not know, however, is that her work with DC actually began more than four years ago, when she connected with Margot Robbie and started putting Birds of Prey together.

As was noted during an interview with the director, this will be an interpretation of the Flashpoint story. But not THE Flashpoint story.

That project will be “different version of Flashpoint than you’re expecting,” Muschietti tells us.

Now some sites are spreading the world this means Aquaman and Wonder Woman will fight to the death in this film.
