Another strong color book. 

40 is another Fiction House book with a wide variety of coloration. The dudes at the bottom left: I have seen them purple, blue, green.

The blonde girl on this cover makes me think of an old Star Trek episode where Spock has a relationship with a girl who lives in a cloud city, while a race called the Troglodytes mine Zenite in caverns below. Although not all that similar.

Truly an original cover, my favorite in the 40s (maybe close with #40).  Some unique elements not present on any other covers in the series, with being underwater and a mermaid of sorts.  And a lot of variation on the colors with this one.  I seem to recall Zolnerowich has one with amazing color, hopefully he shares it again.

The first book I bought was a decent copy:

I then learned that Metropolis would be selling the Edgar Church copies of Planet Comics they had. I made that discovery about 7 months before the sale and sold some other books and began saving so I could buy one book. Another collecting goal I have with regard to Planets is to try to get a pedigree copy from all the pedigrees that contained Planets...yes it is a futile quest.

I knew well in advance the Church Planets would all sell for likely the highest price for the grade and with exception for a few books I was right. I figured I would need to bid double the last GPA sale. It was a reasonable strategy but as the auction took place books were selling for way higher than that. I was determined to get a Church, but as there were so many books offered I also wanted to get a cover I really liked and I was focused on the bondage covers.

When the auction was live I was using 3 desktop computers all signed in to Comicconnect and was bidding on books I thought I may have a chance at. I didn't bother with the earlier numbers as seeing the prices they were fetching I was out of those, I was also out on the super high grades as I knew they were beyond my price range.

I bid on a book and that would send that auction into the 3 minute extended bidding, and while that was happening I would bid on the next book I wanted using the next desktop. I had several windows open all at the same time. The thing is, I just don't have deep pockets and had to stick to my budget so I really could only afford to buy one book. It was exciting, thrilling and an overall fun experience to have participated in. As board members were winning books they were posting them into this Planet thread.

I think participating in the Church auction ranks up there as one of my favorite comic auction memories followed by the Berk auction.

As the auction went on I did bid on 8 of the Church Planets, losing out on all of them... but I did manage to hang on to one. I put in my bid, which sent the book into the 3 minute extended and I would wait on pins and needles as it counted down. Then with 10 seconds left I was out bid and the next 3 minutes began. Again I put in my bid...to be outbid. I was already over my budget, but I also knew this was my absolute best chance to acquire a Church as once these books hit the market the prices would always be higher than this day so I figured out what would be the absolute highest bid I could make (knowing I was eating Kraft dinner for awhile! ) and put the last bid in and....I won! I was thrilled to get it, I love that it is a bondage cover, and a book used in Soti and of course that it is the Church copy. To whoever I was in the bidding war with I thank you for letting it go.
