The Best Collection of Canadian Whites Ever Assembled Premieres in this Summer Featured Auction!

This post is for informational purposes for those of you that are unfamiliar with these incredible comic books that came out of Canada during the Golden Age era. Yes, they are for sale, and this could also be considered a marketing advertisement, but we normally keep those to the other section of this forum. This is being posted here because we feel it is beneficial to the community to know about these books, as many of them have never even been certified before in any condition so this could be your first time seeing them! So, here's the scoop... the first wave of a very important -- game-changing, to be clear -- collection of incredibly rare original comic books published in Canada known as Canadian Whites are being sold in the current auction, closing this evening through Thursday evening. Any Canadian White is considered to be rare in and of itself but this collection, which was built by our consignor over many years, represents a large percentage of the Canadian Whites ever published--almost 300 different examples! An initial, strong batch of 42 of these are included in the current auction and the remainder will be auctioned off on ComicLink in the auctions to come. The impact of this collection of Canadian Whites bears similarity to that of the Mile High collection when it came out, as it introduced comic books published in the 1940s that had never been seen before -- but only American comic books! While it is true that the conditions or quantity are not in the same league as Edgar Church's historic collection, what is similar to the Mile HIgh collection is that almost every example is the very best or close to the best that has ever been certified by CGC, as the rarity of each book is extreme.

In general, Canadian Whites are at least 10 times more rare than American Golden Age comics published at the same time, which is why demand is very high even for low grade examples. How rare are these books? Well, several of the  books being offered here are the Only CGC Graded example to surface after more than 15 years of CGC grading! Most of the others are Single Highest Graded!

Going through this collection was almost like an archeological find as Canadian Whites are not listed in the Overstreet Price Guide and some of these examples are not even listed in the Grand Comics Database, which is dedicated to both U.S. and international comic books. The vast majority of these books have never been offered on ComicLink before, and we thought after 20 years in business that we had seen just about everything!

Canadian Whites Background

During the heart of the Golden Age of Comics of the early 1940s, U.S. comics were deemed “non-essential” imports under the Canadian War Exchange Conservation Act (WECA) and were banned from Canada.  The market for superheroes and other types of comics had already been established in Canada by that time so a small group of Canadian Publishers began putting out their own comics.  Between 1941 and 1946, approximately 600 different issues were published. Due the printing costs, most of these comics had color covers but black and white interiors, which is why they are called “Canadian Whites”. Many of the characters featured in these comics were patriotic English-Canadian heroes including Nelvana of the Northern Lights, a popular super-powered female heroine who first appeared months before Wonder Woman as well as characters like Johnny Canuck, Brok Windsor and Canada Jack. You'll see that a few of the offered examples feature familiar U.S. characters like Archie and Mary Marvel. A significant number of the comics feature the type of high energy covers that have made Golden Age comics the epicenter of the comic book collecting hobby for decades!

When I see "Best" and "Collection" in the same headline, I don't expect to then see a bunch of comics with middling grades.

Welcome to the pump and dump that Canadian collectors have been laughing about for the last ten years.
