Top 5 Fantastic Four key issues?

Hi guys!

 

Besides #1 being obviously the most important key in the run, what other four issues would top your list as the most important key issues?

 

I am more or less just getting into SA US books, but my first thoughts about this would be the following:

 

#1 First appearance of Fantastic Four

#5 First appearance of Dr. Doom

#45 First appearance of Inhumans

#48 First appearance of Silver Surfer & Galactus

#52 First appearance of Black Panther

 

What would your list look like?

#45 and #52 are Johnny-come-latelies, and have only been "important" in the last couple of years. #48-50 have been seminal issues for decades. Surfer is the most important character to come out of FF aside from Doom and the FF themselves.

#12 is one iconic cover for sure. Haven't read the story yet.

...and then do yourself a favor and just pick up 44-67. It's the high point of the greatest run, by the greatest writer, and the greatest artist of the first 50 years of comic book history.

# 6 being a favorite due to a first villain team up that set the stage for Marvel.

 

#51 (This Man this Monster) for superb story telling! I realize it is not a key.

But I'm an old-fashioned (and old) hobbyist.

 

Why 25 for me? The first Hulk-Thing out and out fight was a great idea, pitting two of the most powerful heroes of the Marvel Universe against one another. It was a concept that hadn't been done before in the Silver Age, to my knowledge, and begat many similarly themed stories thereafter. Ish 12 never progresses to a full-blown 'clash of titans'.

 

Lots of other great suggestions in the thread, too, and it's easy to see the argument for them as top keys.

Not easy but… considering "key" as defining in terms of historical development:

 

#1

#5 (Dr. Doom)

#4 (reintroduction of Sub-Mariner)

#48-50 (Galactus, Silver Surfer)

Annual #6 (Birth of Franklin, Annihilus)

 

And then I would add:

 

#2 (Skrulls race)

#13 (Blue zone of the Moon, Red Ghost: sovietic villain)

#36 (Frightful Four, Medusa)

#64-65 (Kree race)

#52 (Black Panther)

The Inhumans books (#45-47) are all important, so are #66-67, and then we can count additional important story arcs and the Annual with Sue and Reed wedding. Oh, and of course #51 too.

This is true of the entire Marvel Universe, which is why it pretty much ends for me in 1972.

For reading I prefer #12 or #51 over #2, but the Skrulls have had a pretty big part in the Marvel Universe over the years.

That's a list of what's hot, not what's important.

 

When the movie hype dies down, Inhumans will fade back into relative obscurity. Same goes for Black Panther, even though I love Panther.

 

FF 4 and FF 12 take their places on the list for me.

 

I agree that Silver Age FF's should be bought in runs, and not single issues. That run is truly a masterpiece.
