Looking for some insight into whether this copy is a black error variant, or a counterfeit. Any help would be appreciated!

Actually, looking at it again, and specifically the Marvel logo, this may be an error version. These can be hard to tell.

i'd also compare it to other ones

I agree with the camera idea...most that "I" have seen for sale the photos are with a camera not scanner...easier to tell with good lighting

Interestingly enough, I haven't been able to find another copy of the black variant in the newsstand edition either. Will try to upload some regular photos tonight.

Valid observation. I have only seen the misprint black cover in direct editions, never seen a newsstand.

Doesn't mean it isn't real, it has all the qualities of the misprint.

I didn't break out a magnifying glass or anything, but I don't see any signs of distress. The red lines outlining Venom and the title seem fairly uniform. I really have no idea, but this will probably be submitted for grading, and soon.

The newsstand error does exist but its very rare. Here is one such copy. I say the best way to find out if it is real is to submit to CGC.
