What you need to understand is that, when the issue was published, ASM was printing an average of 660,000 copies per issue and selling an average of 545,000 copies per issue. Then you need to realize that this is not an average issue, being a virtual (though probably not actual, technically) sellout. While simplified and not perfectly accurate, that's still 115,000 Newsstand copies of ASM 361 that were most likely purchased by dealers and collectors that didn't frequent the newsstand outlets. mr_highgrade just happens to have shown us some visual evidence of what a single one of those people did.

You have to consider more than just the stupid "Newsstands are superultramegarare!" hype, especially when looking at a specific issue.

I agree. This book seems to have a higher newsstand sell and survival rate than others of the same vintage. That said, I’ve been tracking the 9.8 sales and see newsstand 9.8’s tend to carry a 12-15% premium over their direct counterparts. There have been a few outliers on the high side for both editions that had perfect centering on auction.

this book sells so often and had terrible centering overall, it’s worth the effort to find a well centered copy without cover tears more so than strictly finding  a 9.8 newsie, but a newsstand 9.8 copy is measurably harder to find than direct.
