mackenzie999
Fantastic Four Panel Appreciation So I was recently given a copy of Marvel’s Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol. II, which has all my favorite old FF stories from back in the day. As a kid my FF collection went from #1-about #220, minus a few issues. I haven’t read any of these stories in 40 years, so on Fathers’ Day I settled in to read again. I found many panels to be really amusing in various ways, so I started snapping pics and thought I’d share my thoughts. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do. Here's Reed putting the sexist smackdown on the little woman. He looks a little wasted with that lazy eye. mackenzie999
I thought I'd seen all the iterations of Iron man, but I guess I missed this version of him sporting a wicked Philly Fade: KirbyJack
mackenzie999
So I guess by this point (issue 30-something) ol' Jack hadn't fully developed his patented Kirby Dots yet. I'll try to pinpoint their exact moment of origin (assuming that happened in the FF). Here is a formative example, not quite there yet: KirbyJack
mackenzie999
I had heard GRR Martin (Game of Thrones) had published letters in FF as a kid. Here's one, just as whiny and pedantic as you'd expect: KirbyJack
mackenzie999
I love-love-LOVE that Namor's squeeze lives in a fishbowl. KirbyJack
mackenzie999
So, a vicious bunny? Predates Holy Grail, so that's something, I guess. KirbyJack
mackenzie999
So, the Torch can blaze underwater eh? I think that's legal here in Massachusetts now too. KirbyJack
mackenzie999
More sexism from the humbly-named Mr. Fantastic: "Here honey, I couldn't be bothered to actually go out and buy you any, but I found these nearby. Do they get me out of the dog house?" KirbyJack
mackenzie999
Jack's drawing style evolved over the years as we all know. This particular panel is the very first one in the book that feels like true mid-period Kirby in his prime. Nothing particularly awesome about this, but the characters just feel solid and weighty, that hand feels like a real Kirby hand. Maybe it's just the inking but it feels like he turned a corner here. mackenzie999
Still no Kirby dots...well, maybe a couple but he's not really there yet. Edited June 19, 2017 by Mackenzie999 KirbyJack
mackenzie999
Matt Murdoch calling Reed Mr. Murdoch? Old GRRM is gonna have something to say about this for sure... Harry Lime and KirbyJack
mackenzie999
That woman looks worried. She probably should be. KirbyJack
bababooey
Great thread idea, I've had this omnibus out on the hammock this year and have come across a few panels that made me scratch my head.
mackenzie999
Really? An ad for another book mid-story? Well at least they admit it's shameless. KirbyJack
mackenzie999
Well, that's it for now. I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book. If people like this I'll keep going. Hope you've enjoyed them so far. thehumantorch

Drummy
Yeah, these threads are always a blast. Thanks for the research and the commentary! Reed always was a [sufficiently you-know-what]. Dan
KirbyJack
It isn't easy to draw The Thing, and it isn't easy to capture subtle facial expressions. Here's another reason Kirby is King. I cannot express how much I love this panel. FoggyNelson
