Joker draws comparisons to Hong Kong protests in China

People eager to see the film worry the violent, R-rated film might never pass China’s censors, and some blame similarities with the chaos in Hong Kong

Joker had a strong opening weekend around the world, but not in China. Many moviegoers in the world’s second-largest film market fear they may never get to see the controversial comic book movie in theaters.

The latest DC film tells the origin story of Batman’s arch nemesis, the Joker. In this version, he’s an aspiring stand-up comedian troubled with mental illness who morphs into a murderous clown as he grapples with the cruel and apathetic society he was raised in. Society’s role in creating the Joker is seen as a critique of the failures of capitalism. The irony of a potential blackout in Chinese cinemas wasn’t lost on the public.

“A film that criticizes the ideologies of capitalism can be screened in almost all capitalist countries, but it can’t be approved in a socialist country like China,” one person wrote on the movie review site Douban, drawing more than 200 likes. “That itself is a joke.”

Featuring what some call an “Oscar-worthy” performance by Joaquin Phoenix, the film broke box office records this past weekend despite being a subject of controversy. Many worry that the movie invites too much sympathy for a mass murderer and that it might incite copycat crimes.

But in China, cinephiles worry the the movie will never land in cinemas because it paints a bleak picture of a violent society. Even when R-rated films do get released in China, though, they can be heavily censored. Logan, known as Wolverine 3 in China, had 14 minutes cut from the China release. The first Deadpool never got a theatrical release in the country, and the sequel was only released when it got a PG-13 cut titled Once Upon a Deadpool.

“It can [get released] if they change the name to Happy Comedian and cut some violent scenes,” joked one user on Q&A site Zhihu under a question about the possibility of Joker being released in China.

Count on this will be the hot media topic now how Joker spurred this nut to do this.

A man shouting “Allahu akbar!” at a Paris screening of Joker was detained by police after the outburst caused moviegoers to panic Sunday night.

The incident was reported by Le Parisien, which noted that the 34-year-old man was removed from the Grand Rex theater and placed under psychiatric observation.

According to a witness, the man first started repeatedly shouting “It’s political!,” at first drawing laughs from the audience. Soon other audience members were asking him to “shut up” while others grew worried, the witness said.

After the shouts of “It’s political,” the man stood up, placed his hands on his chest and “started yelling Allahu akbar!,” or God is great in Arabic.

The witness told Le Parisien, “People panicked, ran to the exits. Some were crying. A mother was looking for her daughter.” Another witness said some moviegoers climbed over seats to exit, while others were on the floor and being stepped over.

Although the suspect left the scene, police were able to track him down from the phone and jacket he left at the theater. Le Parisien reported that some audience members stayed to finish the film.

Tensions, so far mostly unwarranted, have greeted some screenings since Joker opened. Earlier this month, an audience at a Long Beach theater self-evacuated after a man began acting suspiciously.

Joker earned $1.615 million on Wednesday, down just 34% from its previous Wednesday. That gives it a 27-day domestic cume of $283.784 million as it approaches the end of its first month in theaters. And since it opened overseas on Wednesday the 2nd, its month-long total is now (presuming a continued 32.6/67.4 domestic/overseas split) $870.5 million worldwide.

So, barring a fluke, it’ll pass the $873 million global cume of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice sometime today. At which point, it will be the fourth-biggest DC Comics flick ever behind The Dark Knight ($1.004 billion in 2008), The Dark Knight Rises ($1.081 billion in 2012) and Aquaman ($1.155 billion in 2018). Aquaman’s sans-China global cume was “only” $857 million.

Once it passes the $880 million cume of Spider-Man: Homecoming and the $890 million cume of Spider-Man 3 (in 2007), it’ll be the eighth-biggest “solo” comic book movie of all time, behind only The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Captain Marvel ($1.128 billion), Spider-Man: Far from Home ($1.131 billion), Aquaman, Iron Man 3 ($1.215 billion) and Black Panther ($1.346 billion). If it tops $975 million worldwide in the end, it’ll have earned more than three of those (Spider-Man 2, Captain Marvel and Aquaman) without their respective China grosses.
