Safest method to sell?
0

20 posts in this topic

I don't know what day it will hit me, but one day I will likely want to see my collection.  My question has to do with how to do the safest transaction these days?  I used to buy my "high" dollar books (for me anyway...most I ever spent was $1100 on an AF15, and I found someone selling it on an electronic bulletin board, and mailed the guy a check).

I've seen the horror stories...you mail out a book, and the buyer claims the box was empty.  Who knows if the seller put the book in the box, or if the buyer just claimed it was empty.  Is selling in person the only "safe" method?  Even then, who's going to walk into a meeting place with $10k on them in cash?

You guys have been doing this for years...what's the best method?

Thanks in advance!

The 'safest' way to sell (other than hiring armed guards to escort you) is to simply sell through a reputable auction house.  They won't rip you off, and they handle essentially everything after they get your item (you mail to them w/insurance).  And then you just sit around waiting to get paid.  Of course you have to pay them for you the service.  But its safe.

Or if you're meeting in person, meet at a police station parking lot that is at least somewhat near the appropriate bank.

I would say "in person" is semi-safe, but then robberies happen. The LCS is an option if your willing to part cheaper. MyComicShop or some other 3rd party that will host it and sell it for you and you pick your price would also seem good. Others like ebay leave you liable...

I recommend showing up to every sale with only Youngblood comics. That way if they double-cross you, the joke's on them.

I've been giving some thought about selling at CL, but don't you have to part with your books before you get paid? Not sure I can do that.

Disclaimer: never sold a comic in my life, and don't even begin to know who the players are. But, based on a thread here, Paradise may not be a place to consider.

You do have one thing in common with them though, from what I can understand, and that is they don't know what day either. So it may work out.

Why?  I assume you're referring to the CL exchange.  From what I understand, you don't send your book to CL until after a sale has been made.  You're notified, you send the  book in, they hold it for you until payment has been rec'd, they send the book out to buyer, you get paid by CL.  Sound perfectly fine to me.

Now if it's an auction, that's different.  You have to send the book in before the auction opens.  Otherwise, the same.  You get paid when they get paid.  Otherwise, the book remains safe and sound, and is not sent out to the buyer.

I can get with that.  But for established exchanges or 3rd party/auction houses, they live on their reputation for facilitating transactions, and have for a long time.  Of course nothing is 'foolproof', but it is among the safest options.

These all make the best sense to me, using a trustworthy 3rd party sounds like the best way to go.  Ebay is great for less expensive transactions, where if it goes south, you're not out the bank.

I'm partial to selling on the boards.  I've not had even a small issue up to this point.  You may take a 10% hit (not all the time) but you will with any auction house etc.  Just make sure you protect yourself with insurance and payment options.

Me too depending what you are selling. Although, I have seen very high dollar books sell here. A little work but you are dealing with serious collectors. I have sold a lot of books here and never had a problem. People here don't put up with it. No fees and self policed. Try a big book here and if it doesn't sell the auction houses are always a good alternative.

+1 for selling on the boards.

Great people buying and selling here. I have bought and sold a number of books well into the thousands, and have never had a problem. I think I may have had 2 returns in 200 or so deals and it was very civil.

This place is self policed quite well. Ebay is the wild west, although I do sell there a bit, I know it's just a matter of time before I run into a hassle.
