Popular Post Flambit
In my opinion, this guy did pretty well. I was a little shocked to see it because I'm a Miller DD nut and I've seen just about all the Miller DD covers in person... but not this one Bill C, wormboy, celluloidbuff and 4 others

Popular Post delekkerste
This was a very good San Diego Comic-Con in my opinion. I felt that there was a lot more new material this time around (note: just because pieces showed up at the L.A. show the prior weekend doesn't mean it wasn't still fresh to most SDCC attendees a few days later!), certainly a lot more than last year which was very much the same-old, same-old. Various dealers pulled out some new material for the show, and then Mitch had a lot of all-new consignments and Nick K brought hundreds of his pages to the show from his collection. There were a couple of major collectors showing things privately; one had two twice-up Kirby covers for sale, while another had a lot of good Bronze/Copper stuff, including the DD #160 cover (which CLink bought to put in their August auction from what I was told), It did seem like there were fewer OA collectors than ever on the floor, however, which I attribute to 4 factors, 3 of which I have talked about in the past: (1) people are getting older, (2) getting SDCC tickets/hotel/parking/etc. more of a hassle than ever, (3) comic-con overload (missed SDCC? There's an OA show coming up in NYC in August...and in NJ in September...and maybe even two, including NYCC, in October), and (4) the new L.A. show probably scratched the itch of a number of people who really just wanted to be there for the OA. It's a bit of a shame that more collectors weren't around, but, it did leave time to have more in-depth conversations with the people who were there. Pricing/sentiment: I think pricing was strong again (as usual), but, there seemed to me like there was less sticker shock and that collectors have accepted these levels as the new normal (for now, anyway). I think sentiment was as bullish as I've seen at the show since the 2008 show, which remains, for me, the most outright ebullient I've ever seen. Ditko ASM has supplanted Kirby FF as the new gold standard it seems. There were multiple interior pages available for 6-figures. Burkey had a really nice one for $180K; Thibodeaux had a pair for $175K (most of the value was in one of the two pages and were only available as a set); Bechara had a half-splash on display for I heard around $325K. From what I can tell, Albert won SDCC. I know that the OA to the instant-classic Lee/Williams Batman #50 Bats/Catwoman pin-up sold (dunno the price). There was also a mega-deal involving Albert that I cannot speak to (not being clubby, just don't want to betray any confidences or steal anyone's thunder). Please do not PM for details, as they will not be forthcoming. I know that Mitch moved a good volume of pieces; his sale of the Mister Miracle #6 cover to a Boardie (who has also posted it on Facebook) was the talk of the show - congrats, @glenbru! Mitch also had the Tim Sale Batman: Dark Victory #1 cover, which sold early on Wednesday; wish I had gotten there first, as I would have snapped it up in half a millisecond. Same collector who bought the DV #1 cover got a killer Charles Burns piece from Scott Eder Gallery, which made some of the indie guys I know drool. I know Burkey closed strong, as I have a friend who bought a twice-up Marvel Silver Age cover from him on Saturday (no details; I'm sure he'll post it on CAF soon enough and I don't want to steal his thunder). Burkey also got a couple of very nice DC Silver Age twice-up covers during the show, a Kane Green Lantern and an Infantino/Anderson Mystery in Space cover. Not sure how the other dealers did; I brokered a deal with Los Bros Donnellys on behalf of a friend not at a show for a nice Copper Age cover (sorry, no details, it's going into a black hole). So, there was business getting done, though, one dealer said it was slow on the art side. My good friend Vinnie Z. from Metropolis/ComicConnect ditched his usual shirt/tie combo and cosplayed as Wolverine on Saturday! Finally, I managed to finagle a last-minute invite through a friend/Boardie to the annual GA Cabal confab about 30 miles north of the SDCC on Friday night! A few Boardies who also collect OA were there; wish I was able to stay longer as there was some amazing Golden Age books in the room in the brief time I was there. But, I did think it was awesome that there is a GA Cabal that sits around a table at a tony estate showing off their rare GA books. This is what I imagine happens at Mike Burkey's house with OA! My goodness. He must be a GOOD friend for you to subject yourself to that. I mean, he must be a "dragged me out of a foxhole in 'Nam, saved my life and I owe him a life-debt" kind of friend. Even then. I think you're even with him now. SquareChaos and alxjhnsn

I have been envisioning a rapidly approaching (alternate reality) future where KIRBY prices, on more so-called 'weaker' pieces, stalls out & by default becomes more affordable, and, because of numerous previously well discussed hypothetical variables, demand for them significantly drops...resulting in more 'dead' inventory, and auction material... stinkininkin
Strong contender for winner this year (and most years) is J Scott Campbell. Through talent and a terrific business savvy, he is a runaway juggernaut, an empire unto himself. The numbers after the end of each SDCC must be staggering beyond compare. Alex Ross had a fancy set-up larger than many Manhattan apartments. How much does he sell to afford this kind of set-up??? (the photo below does not capture the full display, which was enormous - he is set up on BOTH sides of one of the aisle and neither side is fully displayed here) Bill SIenkiewicz also had a fancy, gleaming white set-up (I think he and Ross are both repped by the same guy) Edited July 23, 2018 by delekkerste Catwoman_Fan, SquareChaos and Twanj
