"Hey, Trig. Why the long face?"

"Funny"

"No, seriously, what's up?"

"Fed up"

"Why?"

"Someone's written on me face"

"Aw, come on - it's just Sophie working out the advertising rates"

"Don't care. Didn't write all over your face did she"

"She got my hat with the NOT ADVERTISING stamp though, didn't she"

"Aint the same"

"Sure it is!"

"Look, I don't want to talk about it, alright? I'm covered in f:censored:ing writing and I'm not happy about it. Just leave me alone. God damn, it's not even
a f:censored:ing pence copy we're on here
"

"Gee, you sure are touchy today, Trig"

I waste my time here :eyeroll:

Now, I haven't actually found the smoking gun that says who was responsible for soliciting and distributing Dell UK Price Variants in the UK. At an estate sale the other day I picked up this gleaming 1959 book from World Distributors:

 1391396004_FlashGordonSpaceAgeComic3(1959).thumb.jpg.b71677bad5ff1bef7b7753b9a0789975.jpg

That's a cracker, isn't it. An absolute riot of colour.

Now, on the back cover, what do I find hiding in plain sight?

252427871_FlashGordonSpaceAgeComic3(1959)bc.thumb.jpg.ecce8c526e57a9dcae6632b34325edbb.jpg

All the titles match, as do the dimensions and the 9d price. The ad doesn't appear to be referring to any of the WDL reprint titles - they were priced at 6d and one shilling as far as I can tell. But the reprints fit too - both their comics and annuals are taken from original Dell content.

So is this the smoking gun, finally? Is it really that straightforward? And why haven't I seen this ad before, after all this time! hm

Me neither. Probably why the Dell connection hasn't been picked up on before. I love it.

A few recent Dell arrivals...

This Rifleman isn't particularly common, and the previous image in my files wasn't that great so I was pleased to pick it up:

One of the two confirmed UKPVs for Tweety:

And an upgrade:

We could do with some rain, as it goes...

Goy these recently amid a job lot. It's only when you put them side by side that you realize just how wide Golden Age comics were compared to 1950s DCs for example. Dell were slow to change size. Wonder how much money/paper was saved?

An unexpected new FC UKPV - Yak Yak (FC #1186) brings us up to 222 confirmed Dell UKPVs:

It's on the Bay now at an eye watering price. I made a reasonable offer - two pound twenty two - which was of course declined.

Given that it's a UKPV, you'd have thought they'd have added the extra u, wouldn't you, on this two two two....

Be sad & wait for light to dawn on Marble Head. It'll be on there for a few months & then the goober'll be glad of your cheeky offer. :wishluck:

I know. The seller likely based it on some of the US eBay for sale prices. My offer was in line with sold prices.

That's happened before actually. Sometimes, your first offer is your best offer. I can understand them holding out though.

I uploaded one of my Lone Ranger pences to GCD & had a bit of back and forth with two of the editors. They couldn't see it until I gave them an exact location to look in. :roflmao:

Snap. It can be a tough lesson for sellers, but I can be patient.

I'm going to ask how many of the Dell Pence Variants are known to exist in the Four Colour series specifically?

I'm going to answer 68, Eric :)

Within the UKPV cover date range, 68 of an eligible 150 issues exist in pence:

Is this about your Looney Tunes Dell quest?

Here's my Peter Gun - the first known pence FC - and a rare CGC slab in the collection:

Old school "U.K. Edition" labelling (), but Newton Ring free!

Partly that... I would love to get one or two pence variant Looney Tunes for my collection, and if some existed in the FC run they would be obvious targets.  Guess I'm stuck with the main LT title if I want one, though.

But the other reason was I couldn't resist dubbing the FC pence variants "Four Colour" after your comment about them not editing humor in the subtitle.

Here's a nice clean FC that I picked up recently:

I like the colouring, funnily enough. And what a name that is - Vint Bonner. I bet he liked a glass of wine or two.
