March 28th Guest Update:

Word has come from Eric Powell that a scheduling problem has come up that will prevent him from attending. He sends his regrets and hopes that we can try again for 2007!

Wrestling superstar King Kong Bundy will be joining us for the weekend. He'll be talking with fans, signing autographs, taking pictures and selling his own comic book! Also - the King Kong Bundy Collection of comics purchased by the man who still holds the WrestleMania record for fastest pin will be on sale at his booth in the guest area! KKB also appeared on the Fox tv show Married...With Children as Uncle Irwin Bundy.

And word has come that writing superstar J. Michael Straczynski (Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Babylon 5) may be able to make a return appearance to the Paradise TORONTO COMICON. JMS was our mystery guest last year (he wanted to surprise a friend), and he has let us know that, schedule permitting, he should be able to pop up to TO again for the Comicon. His visit last year and his conversation with Dave Sim resulted in the fantastic interview in FOLLOWING CEREBUS #7 - still on sale.

Sucks that Eric Powell can't make it.

Great to hear JMS coming back... missed out on his signing at the last Paradise Con, because I was in other lines. Oh well... this year for sure.

KING KONG BUNDY!!! (sorry for the caps, just happy)

Jennifer Van Meter (Hopeless Savages, The Blair Witch Chronicles) will also be appearing at Comicon!

Would it be wrong to assume that she is the same Jennifer Van Meter that guest-wrote Outsiders #32-33, and wrote the "JSA Classified: Honor Among Thieves" arc (issues 5-7)?

Can Jason Truong be the next generation Kevin Boyd when it comes to comicbook knowledge??? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

nah... I'm only familiar with who does what, because I'm in that Metti-Publisher league.

http://www.metti-publisher.com/cgi-bin/Welcome.cgi

Like the Yahoo hockey pool (which I'm first in both my leagues), just with comic creators (which I'm in first in my league).

Okay, so this has been an interesting week of ups and downs.

Firstly, I have to announce that yesterday Tony Harris contacted us to say that a personal situation has arisen that requires him to be elsewhere on the weekend of our convention so he has regretfully cancelled. It looks like Tony is now our first announced guest for 2007.

So, two guest spots opened up.... two guest spots have been filled:

PLEASE WELCOME:

ANDY SMITH

Andy Smith has slowly but surely become an artistic force to be reckoned with since his days working for Crossgen, and before that, Valiant Comics. Smith recently worked on "Green Lantern" and "Hawkman", and produced the mini-series "Armor X" for Across the Pond Studios. Smith is now drawing the four issue miniseries "RED SONJA/CLAW: THE DEVIL'S HANDS," a Dynamite/DC Comics crossover. The miniseries is written by John Layman, and Alex Ross and Jim Lee are providing the covers.

BART SEARS

Bart Sears, acclaimed artist, has worked on such diverse titles as Captain America and the Falcon, Sabretooth: Open Season (written by Daniel Way), Justice League Europe, X-O Manowar, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, The First, and The Path. At the Paradise Comicon we sell space. A 10 foot by 10 foot booth comes with one 8 foot table, but many vendors will bring additional tables and racking systems to effectively utilize their space. An endcap is a corner booth. Corner booths come with an additional 8 foot table.

So for example, a vendor with 4 booths, two of which are endcaps will receive 6 tables.

Meeting "The Man"

by Kevin A. Boyd

On March 20th the Paradise Comics crew, with the help of Jim McLauchlin of ACTOR and Scott Talmadge from CGC went to the POW Entertainment offices in Los Angeles for a signing with Stan "The Man" Lee.

The special signing had been set up by Paradise and A.C.T.O.R. due to Stan being unable to attend the upcoming April 28-30 Paradise Comics TORONTO COMICON in Toronto, Canada. A donation to A.C.T.O.R. - A Commitment to Our Roots was to be made for every item signed, and Paradise collected just under 400 items from fans and collectors for this special event.

Being that Stan is the busiest man in comics, he could only spare a half an hour from his hectic schedule for the signing before heading off for a screening. Could it be done in a mere 30 minutes? It seemed an impossible task!

While "Amazing", "Incredible" and "Uncanny" are adjectives that can be used to describe his most famous creations, they can also be applied to "The Man" himself - with the help of five able-bodied assistants unbagging and rebagging the comic books and graphic novels Stan transformed from humble comics statesman to the Invincible Signing Machine!

Stan was in fantastic humor, chatting away about different comics and covers. Since Stan had directly supervision over all Silver Age Marvel Comics covers he was able to point out many specifics on why he did or didn't do something on specific covers. He touched upon some of his spectacular new projects in the pipeline and what it was like to be the industry's premiere statesman. He would also pause to note the occasional signature already on some of the books - Rascally Roy Thomas, Jumping Jim Lee, Jazzy John Romita... and he was amazed at some of the books that people had submitted from Amazing Fantasy 15, to multiple copies of Fantastic Four #1, Amazing Spider-Man #1 and X-Men #1, just to name a few! Nearly every Silver Age key was present and a stunning array of modern Marvels.

"You've got a lot of the good ones here!" he proclaimed.

Then came the countdown, 3 minutes... 2 minutes... 1 minute... 30 seconds, it was going to be close... 10 seconds, and right down to the wire we finally got the last book done with no time to spare! No mere mortal could have achieved this sensational signing spotlight!

Then it was time for a quick group picture, a handshake or five and Stan was off to stop Galactus from eating a delicatessen on Santa Monica Blvd.!

Press Release

The Paradise Comics Toronto Comicon - April 28-30, 2006

The award-winning Paradise Comics TORONTO COMICON: A Celebration of Comic Books, Graphic Novels, Manga and Sequential Art returns in 2006 for what promises to be another exceptional year. The three day event will be held in Hall C at Toronto, Canada’s National Trade Centre (www.ntc.on.ca) at Exhibition Place. “We’re moving to the new side of the facility this year” explained Paradise owner Peter Dixon, “and it looks spectacular. People are going to love this new hall.”

This year’s theme is “Expanding Comics to New Audiences” and the Paradise team has sought to expand the convention programming around themes such as:

- The Women of Comics Symposium on Saturday, April 29th seeks to provide a spotlight to promote and support the female creators working in comics today. To accomplish this task, we’ve brought together a stellar line-up of creators – writers, editors, colorists, journalists and cartoonists that represent a wide variety of artistic styles and points of view. Participants include: Jessica Abel (Artbabe), Sandra Bell-Lundy, Samm Barnes (Doctor Spectrum), Shelley Bond (DC/Vertigo), Svetlana Chmakova (DramaCon), Becky Cloonan (American Virgin), Amanda Connor (JSA Classified), Colleen Doran (Book of Lost Souls), Ramona Fradon, Janet Hetherington (Elvira), Heidi MacDonald (The Beat), Linda Medley (Castle Waiting), Patricia Mulvihill (100 Bullets), Rina Piccolo, Diana Schutz (Dark Horse Comics), Nicola Scott (Season of the Witch), Gail Simone (Birds of Prey), Diana Tamblyn, Raina Telgemeir (Babysitter’s Club), Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother), and Renee Witterstaeter (EvaInk Productions). - Literacy Beyond! An initiative to get children interested in reading thru comic books and graphic novels. A special event will take place on Friday, April 28 where 100 students will get a chance to meet and learn from comic book creators. This will carry over all weekend long in the Literacy Beyond! Children’s Activity Area, sponsored by Scholastic. Please note that this year, children 12 years old and younger get in free with an adult.

- Anime and Manga programming: many teens and young adults are exploring comics for the first time thru the bourgeoning Anime (Japanese animation) and Manga (Japanese comics) markets. Otaku Island Productions, our new promotional partner, will be exploring Anime and Manga programming such as Anime screenings (including some exclusive premieres) and costume contests and raffles that should appeal to Anime, Manga and Cosplay fans! For more information visit: www.otakuisland.ca

BOB LAYTON!

www.boblayton.com

The Paradise Comics TORONTO COMICON 2006 is proud to welcome BOB LAYTON as a guest at this year's Comicon. From the classic Invincible Iron Man, Hercules, X-Factor, co-creating the Huntress for DC, designing the Secret Wars line of toys for Mattel, to his incredible tenure at Valiant Comics - first as co-architect of the Valiant Universe, and then as Editor-in-Chief and Senior Vice President, Bob Layton has done it all. After Valiant, he returned to DC and then Marvel for comics projects such as Batman: Dark Knight of the Round Table, Batman: Hollywood Knight, The L.A.W., Iron Man: Bad Blood, Captain America and the Avengers. Giordano, David Michelinie and Bob Layton then formed FUTURE COMICS and it's cast of distinct and unusual properties including Freemind, Deathmask, Metallix and Peacekeeper. One of Future's stated goals was to revolutionize the distribution side of the comics business with the industry's first, totally-autonomous Internet comics company, selling to readers and booksellers alike directly through the world-wide web. Although Layton was eventually forced to close that chapter of his career after only two and a half years in business, the Future intellectual properties are still alive and several are currently under development in Hollywood. Bob Layton has also been involved in many creative aspects of film and television throughout his career, working with such Hollywood luminaries as Howard Stern, Tracy Torme (Star Trek, Sliders, Odyssey 5), Scott Winant (Huff, My So-Called Life, Thirtysomething) and George Romero (Night of the Living Dead). Currently Mr. Layton is working with co-creator David Michelinie and Executive Producer Robert Keyghobad (Carnivale, Cupid) on the development of new properties for major motion pictures and television.
