I've never looked closely at those first issues of Stag. I think my earliest issue is from 1953. Flex Mentallo
Popular Post Darwination
What a successful magazine, who would have thunk it Those early issues look super sweet, I don't think I've ever had any in hand. Wonder when it shifted back to normal magazine size - pretty soon I think. I'd love to have like this one on the small animals attack theme (ish 6): As an aside, and do excuse, Galactic Central doesn't quite have it sorted out, but Doc V does - Goodman had an earlier incarnation of Stag in the early 40s that was meant to be an Esquire competitor. The name was used on a humor digest for single issue (skipped an issue numbering-wise) and then was an over-sized Slick that ran for two issues before transforming to The Male Home Companion for a single ish. I've got The Male Companion (and put it up at the IA). I would *love* to get my hands on the two Stag slicks. The remaindered material from the three slicks went to a single issue of Read!, (scan from McCoy) It was a standard magazine sized but still cool with illustrations from Norman Saunders, Al Avison, Louise Altson and fiction from Erskine Caldwell and John Cheever. Goodman went with atotal Esquire layout for both issues: https://archive.org/details/the-male-home-companion-v-01n-01-1942-10.-select-darwin-ia sample illo or few from The Male Home Companion from the above scan Edited August 10 by Darwination Jayman, Artifiction, Randall Dowling and 2 others

Popular Post Darwination
Bah, picked up a four dollar magazine with three dollar shipping as a scanning copy of a great title. Damn thing has a number of oddly torn and gouged pages besides being crazy brown. It's scannable but all the text restoration work makes the time investment iffy versus finding a different copy. Cavalcade May 1959 A couple of Howell Dodd illos and maybe the largest fear exposed in men's adventure mags, what is my wife up to, anyways???? Her date seems to be the one that wears the pants in this family and she's headed out the back door... buttock, Flex Mentallo, Jayman and 2 others
