Popular Post F For Fake
Continuing my revisit of the various DC events, I just finished up 52 (I took a break after Infinite Crisis to read a few non-picture books) and was delighted to find that I enjoyed it just as much, if not more, as I did when I read it as it was being originally released. The best comparison for this series is with great episodic television featuring a huge cast of characters and numerous storylines. Do they all come together seamlessly? Not really, but the individual threads are tied up in a satisfying way. Written by Morrison, Johns, Rucka and Waid, it's fun to try to identify the voice of the individual writers, but it's nearly impossible as they blend together so well. As it was a weekly series with several artists, you might expect it to be visually jarring, but Giffen doing breakdowns for the entire series allows the whole thing to read smoothly. The fact that they managed to pull this off so well is nothing short of a miracle (further proven by how poor the weekly series that followed in 52's wake turned out. Countdown, Trinity, ugh. Whole lotta suck there.) It helps that the series stars some of my absolute favorite characters, second and third stringers like Booster Gold, Question, Animal Man in particular. But anyone who has an interest in the DC Universe should enjoy this endlessly imaginative series which touches on so many elements of the DCU, from cosmic adventure, to magical crime mystery, to mad scientists, to good old fashioned spandex beat downs. Lots to love here. This should bring my total to around 293. Blackest Night is up next! Raze, bb8, DavidTheDavid and 3 others

DavidTheDavid
104-116 I bought this omnibus from @Bio-Rupp because I am a fan of the Allreds, and I have just loved it. I don't know if I've ready any other stories from Peter Milligan, but he and Allred and all the other creators associated with this project were really firing on all cylinders for this work. I have finished no more than 25-30% of the omnibus, and I can't wait to read the rest. Still hard to believe that Marvel published that at the time, it was a pretty big break with the aesthetic of the X-universe those days. Huge Allred fan for a long time, and that series shows him at his peak. Terrific stuff, glad you're enjoying it! Ken Aldred
Strangely enough, I'm not much into Allred's art style, especially the rag doll figure work poses. Once you get into action scenes, I find it looks a bit messy and clumsy. However, Peter Milligan's one of my favourite writers, and I was more impressed with that aspect. X-Force / X-Statix does feel more like an indie title than something from Marvel. F For Fake

The Boys was 2006 or thereabouts, I believe. X-Force definitely hit first!

His linework is so clean and deceptively "simple" looking. Admittedly I haven't kept up in recent years, I understand his Silver Surfer run is supposed to be good as well, I need to track it down. I highly recommend this. Not only for the gorgeous visuals, but also for the touchingly human story of the silver surfer. F For Fake
Raze
272-277 The Low Low Woods 1-6 Another Hill House book. I probably would not have read this if anyone would’ve told me what it was about but it was really well done and I enjoyed it. From Mycomicshop.com Shudder-To-Think, PA, has been on fire for years. The coal mines beneath it are long since abandoned. The woods are full of rabbits with human eyes, a deer woman who stalks hungry girls, and swaths of skinless men. And the people in Shudder-to-Think? Well, they're not doing so well either. When El and Octavia wake up in a movie theater with no memory of the last few hours of their lives, the two teenage dirtbags begin a surreal and terrifying journey to discover the truth about the strange town that they call home. It worked well, the supporting characters cast was imbued with personality, the story circled back nicely and the wrap-up was satisfying. srezvan
Just wrapped up the Strain: the Fall, which is the 2nd of 3 series. Still a solid read, maybe 4/5 stars. The artwork continues to look rushed at times. Next up, the Silver Surfer GN from '91. All this talk about the Silver Surfer is getting me interested. I'm getting a lot of reading done, but my list continues to expand. Raze

DavidTheDavid
117 - 120 Allred cracked me up with the Hourman story. Hourman pops a miracle pill for what he soon learns is a false emergency. Left with the jitters for the next hour, he looks for productive ways to spend his energy. I enjoyed Wynd and to make room for it on my pull list, I dropped Gerard and King's Strange Adventures which has done nothing to engage me. Ken Aldred
146 to 165 X-Statix The Complete Collection Vol 1 : X-Force 116 to 129, The Brotherhood 9, X-Statix 1 to 5 One of my favourite X-Men series, especially for Peter Milligan’s stories. A team quite openly expressing jaded cynicism and contempt towards their audience, knowing that they’re only being tolerated as mutants while they’re a source of public entertainment; the widespread paranoia and hatred against their kind temporarily replaced by a surging excitement while watching them risk their lives, just gladiators in fights being documented in video for reality TV. Fickle, empty idolatry; media stars, rich, but ’success’ tainted by the overhanging threat of having little chance to really enjoy any of it for very long because of the high mortality rate and disposability of the team. The stories just keep getting better and better, with the first X-Statix arc being quite brilliant, especially for its very unexpected ending. I like Allred’s art, but to me it seems patchy, and I don’t get enthusiastic about it. That said, the series does feel more like an indie super-hero saga than a Marvel, and his style is well-suited.
