aokartman
Good post, those prices may seem silly today, but the market was still growing. There were fewer buyers then for classic pages than there are today. Fun to see if it all holds up. Fingers crossed. I am hoping for a gentle wave of transition to new collectors! Old Dave, David S. Lee B.
Fun stuff! And if you go here: http://www.comicartads.com/ and type "1998" into the "Search Terms" box, you can get over 300 ads like this from 1998. What really gets me are the $150 John Byrne pages from Iron Fist and MTU offered by Tom Horvitz that year. Cheers, Lee grapeape and NC101

I think it’s important to show all the footprints to how we got where we are today. I know it’s easy to look at these prices today and go “you should have bought everything.” Lee I was a family man with two young kids at the time. I had very little disposable income. I always think of John Romita’s great attitude about art value. He never dreamed of values like today. Very few did. It’s really absurd in some ways. It’s also thrilling to see how far we’ve come. Really unbelievable a Brian Bolland Killing Joke page from a 1989 ad on the link you provided $550. That was a HUGE amount of money back in the day for that - which probably explains why he had it for all of those years. Wonder what happened to that page? Those Ditko Spidey pages were not cheap either... grapeape
zhamlau
What’s odd is I remember seeing ditko art at shows in the 80s and it was over 1000. So little movement in the 10 years afterwards. taro90 and grapeape

He tried unloading that on me. I hated that splash still do!!! It just felt like Hulk and Thor were decapitated and had their heads poked on picket signs. Creepy. The only Ditko ASM ad I have in my collection from the 1980s is this ad from 1987, so perhaps this art was not universally over $1,000 in the 1980s: Twanj

It depended on who had them. Some sellers valued them more than others. Lee B.

I was looking through the 98 ads from Lee and found an ASM Romita cover for $5300. I remember seeing it back then. Fantasizing about buying then I’d look over at my wife and two young kids and come back to reality. JadeGiant
1998 was the year I got back into comics after taking off a few years from actively collecting. Started with comics and related merchandise but still had no clue about original art. I agree about the Thor page - never appealed to me in the comic ... but that Avengers 3 page ... wow, that is stunning. Great thread!

Bittersweet I’m sure but you’ll just have to try and suck it up with your ASM splash page.
