I thought CGC was tough on this one. The dark tide-line on the back cover brings the grade down, but I would have still graded it in the 5.5 - 6.0 range. What do you think?

I think CGC hates stains, so I'm not surprised.

How are the staples? Any rust?

No rust on the staples. The front cover presents like an 8.5. The back has the tide-line, and some yellowing. No creases or missing paper.

Gotcha. Front is nice but that is a very heavy water line especially at the top. I had to zoom in on my phone to get a better look as I thought it was a tear at first. I would have kept it at least in the 5.0 range balancing out the front and back and staples being untouched.

4.5 is right what I would have expected it to grade, and probably what I would have called it myself.

Recent addition - My Own Romance # 39 -

Behind the cover, we find, in order, Pike, Tartaglione, Hartley and Colletta.

What a strange crew! I believe they put together all the artists for whom my opinion of their work constantly changes from one story to another. Sometimes [Pike / Tartaglione / Hartley / Colletta] is sublime, others *yuck*. For some, it's related to the genre. Pike Romance  Pike War  For others, it's unrelated to genre. Hartley will turn in one great job then follow up with a turkey. It's maddening.

So, for the scorecard, in this issue:

Pike  - he even gifts us with a splash similar to the covers he did in surrounding issues -

Tartaglione  - attention to details puts this one over.

Hartley  - I won't even show it

Colletta  /  - It's perplexing that from one page to the other, the effort is night and day. Now, I am not as versed as others but if multiple hands worked on this story, they alternated pages and every other page is a delight while the other half is lacking. Here's the unsual splash.

Very pretty front and what a great Everett cover! Not sure what a “tide line” is but sadly, it has a nasty water stain in the upper right corner. 4.5 doesn’t sound out of line to me. Maybe a 5.0

Crack it out, put it in a nice Mylar and problem solved.

but it is one gorgeous 4.5!
