Tales of Suspense thread

Found this on Heritage tonight. The store stamp is from my old hometown of Kokomo, Indiana, and from a place my brother and I frequented as kids; Appleton's Book Store. This was the closest thing we had to a back issue store back in the 60's. You could take your old comics to them, and they would give you a store credit for other books in the store. They had all kinds of old books; comics, magazines, paperbacks, hardbacks, you name it. Unfortunately, they would lop off the right lower corner of comic books and label the book with their "No Return" stamp. I just found it interesting to see this Tales of Suspense #40 show up on Heritage's auction, coverless nevertheless. Anyone else have any stores like this before the advent of dedicated comic book shops?

Good to have a recent coverless sale of #39 to answer the question where it is right now (though honestly, with how high coverless or single pages of AF15 have selling for I was expecting a final hammer price slightly higher for this - especially considering a coverless sold on clink a month ago for double this price)

Coverless prices are all over the map...+/- 50% in either direction. This rat meal went for $2K as well...

Sheesh, that is all over the place. I guess we can say $2,000 is the low floor for TOS39 coverless and honestly seems like the time to buy if you can get it for that price (as if AF15 single pages are going for 3-5k each we should be safe to assume this full book will hit that one day the focus of nostalgia shifts back to Iron Man in a few years)

Agree. The last coverless AF15 sold for close to $16K. As you said, single pages are going for $3-5K. I'd bet the next well presenting coverless AF15 hits $20K+. More and more buyers are being priced out of even coverless copies of AF15. The next tier of star heroes is who they'll move on to next...TOS #39, JIM #83, Hulk #1, etc.

Thats a gem!  Not often I see a higher grade of this such as yours.  First X-men cross over, first Avengers crossover and first Tales of the Watcher back-up stories. Ties with or falls between Avengers/X-men issues 2 to 3. Steve Ditko art on X-men. (I dont think that occurred very often} definitely a bargain considering its relevance.
