HBO Max is set to explore the origins of the Peacemaker character, the master of weapons from the highly anticipated upcoming The Suicide Squad film, in the new Max Original action-adventure-comedy series Peacemaker. HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order of eight episodes for the first season of the show. John Cena will reprise his role from The Suicide Squad movie to star in the series, and the film’s acclaimed writer/director James Gunn will write all eight episodes of Peacemaker and will direct multiple episodes, including the first. Gunn and The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran will serve as executive producers of the series, with Cena as co-executive producer. Based on characters from DC, Peacemaker will be produced by Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television. Peacemaker is scheduled to begin production in early 2021, prior to Gunn beginning work on the next Guardians of the Galaxyfilm.

While details about Peacemaker are being kept under wraps, the series will explore the origins of the character that Cena will play in the upcoming film, a man who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it. The series will extend the world that Gunn is creating for The Suicide Squad movie, which is scheduled to be released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures on August 6, 2021.

James Gunn said: “Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest person_who_is_obnoxiously_self-impressed. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

John Cena said: “I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

“James Gunn has the unique ability to create an expansive universe while also bringing to life the soul and wit of each character. We look forward to a deep dive into the world of Peacemaker,” said Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer for HBO and HBO Max.

Now that Peacemaker will be getting a spin-off TV series at HBO Max (with Gunn heavily involved), the implication is that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won't be filming any time soon. According to a report from THR, the filmmaker will be working on the small screen project first before jumping back to finish his MCU trilogy. The Cena-led series is set to kickstart production early next year, although no word yet when it will drop on the streaming platform.

Given this new development, it's curious if this project has long been in development over at DC Films and was part of Gunn's original project slate at Warner Bros. when he boarded The Suicide Squad. Depending on the chronology of events, it's possible the idea came about after the filmmaker hatched the narrative for his upcoming DCEU flick. Since HBO Max seems to be betting big on comic book narratives with Zack Snyder's Justice League and Gotham PD prequel show in the pipeline, the studio was easily convinced. Based on Gunn's previous comments, Marvel Studios was okay to wait for him to finish his commitment over at DC before picking things up with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, meaning Kevin Feige and his team are aware of this new project.

In any case, there's no rush into filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Marvel Studios' Phase 4 slate is filled up until at least 2022, with other upcoming projects like the threequel still without confirmed release dates — that's on top of their Disney+ series turn-out. However, while this may not be a big deal in terms of production scheduling, it's curious how this continued delay would impact the film's story, if at all. The cosmic film was supposedly going to follow-up the Infinity Saga, and it's curious if they have to alter some key plot points to reflect the delay. Safe to say that it will be quite a while before fans find out with Gunn's focus now on The Suicide Squad and its upcoming spin-off.

Brooks will play Leota Adebayo in the series, which will explore the origins of Cena’s Peacemaker character, a man who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it. The Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters on August 6. Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker and will direct several episodes. He’ll serve as EP with the film’s producer Peter Safran with Cena as co-executive producer.

And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

"I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

EXCLUSIVE: Nhut Le has been cast to recur on HBO Max’s Peacemaker as Judomaster.

In DC lore, the character has been seen in three different previous iterations. The first Judomaster premiered in Special War Series #4 back in November 1965, created by Joe Gill and Frank McLaughlin. Originally known as Hadley “Rip” Jagger, he was a sergeant in the World War II U.S. Army.  The Charlton Comics character was ultimately sold to DC. A different Judomaster was created by Paul Kupperberg and artist Michael Collins for Justice League  Quarterly #14 (1994), in which the new Judomaster assists Blue Bettle, Captain Atom and Nightshade in joining Peter Cannon’s battle against Andreas Havoc.  There was also a female Judomaster, Sonia Sato, who was part of the Birds of Prey (#100 in 2007).

Le is a Groundlings and UCB alum. He’s repped by Ross Grossman at Affinity Artists Agency and Bohemia Group. Le has recurred on Comedy Central’s The Kroll Show and on Disney Channel’s Raven’s Home. He joins previously announced Peacemaker regulars John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Chris Conrad, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Robert Patrick and Chukwudi Iwuji.

Peacemaker is the spinoff streaming series to James Gunn’s upcoming Aug. 6 Warner Bros Suicide Squad movie, centering on John Cena’s mercenary character, who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it. Gunn executive produces with Suicide Squad’s Peter Safran. Gunn will write all eight episodes and will direct multiple episodes, including the first. Cena is co-EP. Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television. Production will begin early this year.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that the John Cena-led Peacemaker show will premiere on HBO Max in 2022. The series, created by James Gunn, will star Cena as the titular DC antihero in a reprisal of his upcoming performance in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Peacemaker will also star Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Holland, Chris Conrad, and Chukwudi Iwuji.

Peacemaker, real name Christopher Smith, is a violent vigilante who is driven by a desire to bring peace, no matter how many people he has to kill to achieve it. John Cena will debut the character in The Suicide Squad later this year, where he’ll be fighting alongside the likes of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), and Bloodsport (Idris Elba). The spinoff Peacemaker series will show the origins of the character and flesh out his absurdist, violent story.

James Gunn reveals the directors joining him on Peacemaker, the spin-off series of The Suicide Squad he created for HBO Max. Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker and directs five of them, including the series premiere, and recently revealed Jody Hill (Observe and Report, HBO's Eastbound & Down) is behind the camera on one episode. Speaking to Collider ahead of The Suicide Squad, where John Cena (Bumblebee, F9) joins the DC Extended Universe as a violent DC Comics anti-hero, Gunn reveals the remaining two directors joining himself and Hill on Peacemaker.

Brad Anderson (Fringe, DC's Titans) and Rosemary Rodriguez (Marvel's Jessica Jones, The Walking Dead) will each direct an episode of Peacemaker. Spinning out of The Suicide Squad, the streamer describes the Max Original action-adventure-comedy series as an exploration of the origins of Cena's character: "A man who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it."

Peacemaker is "an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world's biggest [dirtbag]," the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker said when announcing the series he executive produces alongside The Suicide Squad's Peter Safran.

"I'm excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake."

In The Suicide Squad, John Cena's Peacemaker is a constant irritant for Task Force X's chosen leader, Bloodsport (Idris Elba). Peacemaker's unflinching commitment to mayhem in the name of peace is a hilarious schtick but as the third begins, Peacemaker's arc takes a much darker turn.

Spoiler

A post-credits scene for The Suicide Squad reveals that Peacemaker did indeed survive the operation on Corto Maltese, and was recovered by Waller's people. As we watch Peacemaker recuperating in a hospital bed, it's revealed that Waller's underlings Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and John Economos (Steve Agee) have been assigned to be Peacemaker's handler's - as a stern punishment from Waller. Harcourt and Economos were part of the mutiny by Waller's staff when she tried to detonate Task Force X's cranial bombs when they chose to fight Starro. So now, they get to babysit the biggest "person_who_is_obnoxiously_self-impressed" on the team.

The Suicide Squad post-credits scene sets up big stakes for this Peacemaker series. While the HBO Max series is tagged as being "The origin of the DC superhero so dedicated to world peace that he is prepared to use force of arms to achieve it," it's now clear it will be more than just a prequel.

The closing lines of dialogue from Harcourt and Economos tease that Peacemaker's next assignment to do no less than 'save the f*ckinworld.' And since actors Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee are both part of the Peacemaker series cast (for all eight episodes, no less) it's safe to assume that the series will pick up from where The Suicide Squad left off - even if it also delves back into Peacemaker's origin, along the way.

I'm interested in this show. Obviously it'll depend on how much I enjoy Suicide Squad, but I'm somehow really looking forward to the Peacemaker show. I don't know a heck of a lot about the character (almost nothing really) and I've only really ever seen John Cena in the Bumblebee movie, yet I think it could be good seeing it's got Gunn at the helm.
