Diaolos
Just wondering how much would marvel chipping on the spine affect the grade. See pics If it was not for this I would say book would be an 8.5 Edited November 2, 2020 by Diaolos
Popular Post Randall Dowling
That's not Marvel chipping... Marvel chipping occurs on the opposite side of the book (where it was cut). That's spine wear and it's pretty severe. I'd be looking at 4.0 territory if the rest is 8.5ish. silversurfer275, James J Johnson, PopKulture and 2 others
PopKulture
Agreed, not Marvel chipping - it looks like possible insect damage.
kav
also in the insect damage camp.

That, or the spine was stuck to something and when pulled away, this was the result. Could have been heat that caused this as well. That entire spine, the bundles of page ends has glue applied to secure the cover. Also, although I've seen many bound volumes of comics, stitched and glued or both, I don't recall ever seeing a bound volume of 80 pagers or other such square-bounds. Could this have been glued into a bound volume and now detached? kav

PickleRick1216
Here is a pretty good example of marvel chipping on the right side of my ASM #6.
comicginger1789
Definitely not Marvel chipping and definitely would hurt the overall grade. It looks like the glue ate away at the paper...or something did. I would think 4.5-5.0 would be the best grade one good hope to get if the rest of the book presented 8.0 ish
JollyComics
The square bound spine is always problematic. I grew up seeing them imperfect but fewest are perfect. The hard core collectors always look for the perfect square bound spines. Not easy to find them. Diaolos and B2D327
Buzzetta
Looks like it was stacked in a pile and insects got at it from the spine OR Moisture got at it and then something rubbed up against it over the years. But that book was stacked in a pile at one point with others. Edited November 3, 2020 by Buzzetta
