Is this normal in slabs?

I have started back into the hobby and have bought probably 8 slabs thus far. I received this one today and it looks nothing like any of the others. At first glance I thought it was cracked but it appears to be a type of inner tab of some kind. Is this normal?

Perfectly normal.  The first time I saw this a couple years ago, at a glance, I thought it was a crack in the case.  Imagine my relief when I looked at it closer.  Lol.:headbang:

I believe it's  called a wedge to keep the book in place?

Yes. It's just a small piece of plastic that helps keep the book in place in the inner well. It's often used for books with an odd size that don't fit any of the standard sized wells...

Yup, I've been noticing it lately on a quite a few war era and post war error books when the books were sized to conserve paper.

(I've been scanning my collection)
