DC Films Boss Walter Hamada Has Departed Studio As Warner Bros Discovery Finalizes Exit: The Dish

https://deadline.com/2022/10/dc-films-boss-walter-hamada-warner-discovery-david-zaslav-1235149111/

The shame of this is as a horror producer he had a long engagement with the studio that led to his selection as head of DC Films. But even the article noted he is not the front man type like Kevin Feige to get out there with work the fans up over all these productions. But they did credit him with something he shouldn't get credit for.

Hamada also was an EP and had his hands on two of DC’s highest-grossing movies, James Wan’s Aquaman ($1.1 billion) and Todd Phillips’ Joker, which won two Oscars and became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time at $1.07 billion.

Hamada didn't want Joker made, and even short-changed the budget leading to outside investors being given profit shares to fund the film. So it became a success despite poor WB/DC Film executive handling.

Joker Is A Huge Success For WB (But They Won't Take All The Profit)

In what has been heavily buzzed around town, Jesse Ehrman has been named President, Production and Development at Warner Bros. Pictures.

The studio has also upped Cate Adams, Peter Dodd and Sheila Walcott to SVP, Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Additionally, studio veteran Kevin McCormick will continue in his role as EVP, Production, working closely with Ehrman.

These announcements were made today by Michael DeLuca and Pamela Abdy, Co-Chairs and CEOs, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

On the heels of Black Adam's opening weekend, WBD stock is down 1.6% this morning in early trading - while the S&P 500 is up 0.35%.

Odd correlation assumption as if you research similar competitors they are down even more.

?

But like...Which of those had the # 1 movie of the weekend? And the largest solo opening weekend ever for one of the few remaining Hollywood movies stars? And a superhero that was (supposedly) loved by fans (if you disregard the entire "Does DC hate its comics fans?" thread)?

Also - the standings ultimately shifted a bit today:

  • Paramount Class B: - 0.68%
  • Disney:  - 0.27%
  • Roku: + 0.94%
  • Fox: + 0.43%
  • Netflix: - 2.46%
  • WBD: - 2.30%

I reckon "But...it didn't fall quite as much as Netflix" isn't the best take...

"Shazbot! He brought facts to my earlier post about the rest of the market all being positive. Time to adjust accordingly!"

That is some big news!

The hierarchy of power in the DC universe really is changing.

In a stunning turn of events, filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran have been tapped to lead DC’s film, TV and animation efforts as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, a newly formed division at Warner Bros. that will replace DC Films.

The unprecedented move, in which a top director will assume a top executive post, marks the end of a months-long search by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to replace DC Films boss Walter Hamada, who departed the studio last week. That search had all of Hollywood guessing and playing executive bingo for who will get one of the most coveted — and challenging — jobs in town.

Gunn will focus on the creative side, while Safran will focus on the business and production side of things. Both are expected to continue to direct and produce projects, respectively. They will report directly to Zaslav, and work closely with Warners film bosses De Luca and Pamela Abdy. Sources say the deal runs four years and Gunn will be exclusive to DC. The goal is for them not just to be producers, but to truly function as execuctives even as Gunn will occasionally hone a movie.

Quote

“We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children,” Gunn and Safran said in a statement. “We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”

It will be interesting to see how this works out.  Gunn is certainly creative and talented and has a vision, but every future DC movie can't reflect just his artistic vision.  In my view, GotG v2 was way too much like GotG (and also too long), and The Suicide Squad was just ok - better than Suicide Squad but still not all that compelling while being an obvious "James Gunn movie."

Gunn has to be able to recognize potentially good treatments for DC characters that other people come up with and also recognize bad treatments that should be round-filed.  He also needs to able to develop/recognize an overall treatment strategy for the DC brand.  Where are they, and where do they want to go and how do they get there from here?  Those are artistic questions, not dollars and cents questions.
