I'm not sure what isn't clear.  Everybody tries to push the envelope on how "witty" and "funny" they think they are.  Everybody's "line" can be further away then most.  When you get some pushback you went too far.  Reel it in a bit and move on.  Don't cry about your freedom of speech rights.  It isn't your message board and if you don't like the rules leave.  Better yet show us how funny you really are and come up with something new instead of recycling old jokes.

We seem to be having a moderation discussion outside of the moderation discussion thread, again, so any value / outcome will be lost as, in time, people will forget where it took place.

That said, my contribution to the discussion on this is that I think the community can police itself, with the occasional prod from moderation when things get out of hand. The 'that's what she said' brigade started up in one of the threads I created a while back, I asked them nicely to take it elsewhere and to be fair they did. As far as its wider use goes, if it were me, as moderator, and I felt that phrase was becoming a problem, I would tell the individuals who I felt were making it a problem, privately, what I expected of them. That would be my right, as moderator. They could discuss it with me, and maybe change my mind, but my decision would be final. If they then complained to me the first time someone else used the phrase, claiming inconsistency, I would remind them that the repetition from them was the issue, not the occasional one off use. 

All we need, I think, are general cues from moderation and targeted advices to those who are pushing the boundaries. The people who get to decide what the boundaries are, and who has overstepped them, are the moderation staff. If we don't like that, we can discuss it with them. If their decision still stands, that's it.

@CGC Mike Mike - the phrase in question is a reference to popular culture. Are you saying that the perceived offence to women associated with that phrase is the issue, and therefore it should not be used at all here, or was your intention to try to just regulate it's overuse? If the latter, that is the general cue to all members - don't post the same thing a 100 times a week, whether it is this phrase, a gif or some other comment. Be reasonable. If it is the former however, I would make it a rule in the Moderation framework and then moderate those who break it.

Politics aren’t allowed. Censoring language that upsets an individual is 100% political these days.

I get it Bob. I'm not the guy doing the pushing of the envelope here. There is a certain comradery in some of these jokes too. I mean the ole Phil's parking lot always brings a thought of the time when that one board member had his FDQ moment , and we all kinda had our fun with that.  Or the other things like  tree fiddy, and how about that bozo who sold his Tales of Suspense 39 for car rims. In a weird way it kinda brings us all together.  It's our history,  our soul, our community.

I'm fine with all that my friend.  I was never a fan of the "that's what she said " thing anyway. I just dont think cleaning house of everything is good. So thank you for easing my mind that we are still able to not be moderated to the point of extinction.

You're welcome Oak. If I've overstepped the mark by suggesting we won't be moderated to the point of extinction, and that all that was being asked for today was for some people to show some reasonable restraint, I'm sure Mike will put me straight.

Out of respect to you mike and considering your fairness and wisdom so far I can slow down on using it a lot.  I do have to take issue with 'women find it offensive'.  I have a fair amount of women friends on facebook and they find it hilarious-I use it there a lot too of course and so do they.  I first learned abt thats what she said from the women in my office 30 years ago.
There may be a woman or some women that find it offensive, but that would be the outliers in my 30 years of experience using and hearing this phrase.  The reason this phrase has stuck around for so long is because it is so funny.  the earliest documented case of the phrase appears in a 1975 episode of Saturday Night Live. In particular, it was Chevy Chase using the joke during "Weekend Update" on the show's first season. It was kept in popular use on Saturday Night Live through repeated uses in "Wayne's World" sketches and, later, the movie.

Honest question -
Firstly, would "that's what he (or they) said" be acceptable if the goal is attract more female visitors?
Secondly, what if "that's what she said" is legitimate reply to something posted?
Not a fan of the original phrase / meme but just looking to make sure.

If the goal is to attract more female visitors we might want to run some shoe or bag sales in the comic sales thread

I was thinking the same thing;) I'm not sure about shoes because they are hard to fit and you often have to return them, but jewelry, clothing items that are ...never mind;)

"That's what she said" has a vague sexual connotation.  I really didn't care about it much for a long time. After a while I found the constant repetition annoying. Sorry @kavI don't know any women who use it. 

That doesn't mean that I expect the men here to use "female friendly terms" all the time,I don't believe in that at all...but  it's the constant repetition. My husband is a great guy...once he finds a joke that one person laughs at, he repeats it. after a while I just walk away. I do that here, I close the thread if "That's what she said" seems to be the gem of the day.

 

 Occasional repetition is no big deal. Phil's parking lot or three fifty (although I'm not quite certain why that one is funny) are not repeated quite as often.

 

Maybe repeating something over and over is  a guy thing...I have no idea, never having been a guy.

I once posted Burt Reynold's Playboy centerfold to even out the "babe" threads, I got bored after posting it a few times...maybe because I'm not a guy;)

Comics have the reputation of being "an old boy's club", that's one of the things that I'm guessing many females do not find enticing.
