Sugar and Spike #93 pg 11 - How to Play “Arrgh!” by Sheldon Mayer (all)
I think Sheldon Mayer was brilliant. He pulled Superman from the “reject pile.” He was DC’s best editor in the Golden Age. He stepped back and did what he loved most - cartooning. His best work showed up the most in Sugar and Spike. That wonderful series ended with issue 98 due to Sheldon’s failing eyesight. DC produced a decade later a 99th issue. That 99th issue is labeled as such and was part of a “Silver Age Classics” series.

One of my collecting goals has been to get a one-page, published

Skippy - 1933-07-06 - Crosby, Percy
Skippy was huge. Percy Crosby licensed him to everyone for every kind of product. He missed one an it contributed to his downfall - peanut butter. It’s a wonderful strip with a thriller of a backstory in Percy’s life. Charles Schulz acknowledge Skippy as inspiration. I love his sketchy style and his sense of humor matches mine.

General Discussion of my Faux Sugar and Spike #100 covers
As mentioned above, I think Sheldon Mayer is brilliant with Sugar and Spike capping his career as a cartoonist. That wonderful series ended with issue 98 due to Sheldon’s failing eyesight. DC produced a decade later a 99th issue as part of its “Silver Age Classics” series. This issue was special in two ways:
  • It contained new to the US material created by Sheldon after cataract surgery restored his eyesight. This material was sold outside the US initially. There’s supposed to be a lot of it. The others issues in the series were straight reprints.
  • It was numbered to continue the original series on the cover; the other members of the series used the original issue numbers on their covers.
One day, DC will resume publication of S&S in the US with the material he did for sales outside the US. When that day comes, it will need to be a big event with many variant covers. I am here to help with that!

This has been a great year for these with one arriving just after the start of 2020 (an extended Christmas present) and the other as an anniversary present.

Faux Sugar and Spike #100 featuring the Legion of Super-Heroes by Jeffrey Moy
Jeff was the artist on a long run of the Post-Zero Hour Legionnaires series. It was a delightful book that started the Legion over. This era is often know as the Reboot Legion or the Archie Legion. The tale represents our heroes (S&S) teaming with the LSH to find the brains (Bernie the Brain and Braniac 5) of the groups. He nailed it.

Faux Sugar and Spike #100 Cover featuring Maggie Simpson by Bill Morrison
Bill is best known for being the Editor of MAD for a time and for his long run with Bongo Comics who published The Simpsons. I love this one. Sugar is one-upped by Spike and Maggie is taking over!

Preliminary drawing for Sprang’s The Batcave Revealed
Late in his life, was rediscovered by Bob Koppany who wrote a wonderful book about and his career, The Art of Richard W. Sprang. In the book, Bob wrote about four “Batcave” commissions. This is the preliminary for one of those four.

Had a great time building my collection this past year. Here are my Best of 2021.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #5 Cover by Geoff Shaw - CAF Link - Published/Unpublished Comic Book Covers

One of my favorite Shaw covers and a perfect single image summary of the first Cosmic Ghost Rider mini-series.

Thanos #14 Cover by Geoff Shaw - CAF Link - Published/Unpublished Comic Book Covers

The 1st cover appearance of Cosmic Ghost Rider, and a beautiful piece by Shaw. I love the Mignola-esque blacks in the asteroid belt. One of the most important additions to my collection since I started, completing the major "key" trifecta of 1st appearance, 1st cover appearance, and 1st self-titled cover.

Gotham By Midnight #1 Cover by Ben Templesmith - CAF Link - Published/Unpublished Comic Book Covers

The first cover to my wife's favorite comic series. Still astonished this was available from the artist 6 years after publication.

Thor: God of Thunder #2, Page 13 by Esad Ribic - CAF Link - Published/Unpublished Interior Panel Pages

Possibly the best page from Gorr, the God Butcher's 1st appearance. I was incredibly excited to add such an exceptional page from such a talented artist as Ribic from one of my favorite comic stories of all-time. Not to mention Gorr's imminent appearance in the MCU

Cosmic Ghost Rider Commission by Eranga Devasurendra - CAF Link - Published/Unpublished Commissions/Recreations

I'm not much for commissions, but I had to get a piece from fellow CAF Collector Conversationalist Eranga when I found out about his artistic talents. Really thrilled to have such a great piece by a friend.

When you replied to my claim on Ike's FB post, I thought you meant that you had beaten me (again!). :) Better luck on the next Sprang!

Starfire commission by Tom Grummett

Years ago I commissioned Eduardo Barreto to do a commission of Starfire and the events that happen to her during his run. So back in November. I commissioned The with the same basic idea. He knocked it out of the park just like Eduardo did but in a different way.

Runners-Up

1. Adventures of Robin Hood (1948) Belgium re-release by Jiel

The film is one of my all time favorite films. What when ever it's shown at the local vintage films theatre I go to see it. Great example of a foreign movie poster of a US release. This and the X-9 I agonized over in picking the 5th Best of entry for 2021.

2.  Secret Agent X-9 pitch piece by Eduardo Barreto

Another piece that almost got in my best of for 2021. I saw this on a blog for a guy who worked with Eduardo. This was just before Eduardo died. I saw the piece and loved the composition. Years later I won it in an auction

I'm a huge fan of the original 1960s OUTER LIMITS TV series . . . and 'Demon With a Glass Hand' remains my favorite episode. In 1986 Marshall Rogers adapted writer Harlan Ellison's original (unrevised) teleplay for a DC Comics graphic novel release. The main difference between the aired 1964 episode and the 1986 graphic novel adaptation is that the latter commences with Trent's interrogation of Breech and reinstates a sequence involving an attack on Trent's apartment with hand grenades (not shown in the aired episode . . . and probably cut for budgetary reasons). The filmed episode, following an opening narration shown against a backdrop of New York's Times Squares, commences with the bottom row of panels from pages 6 in which Trent speaks his first lines, "I was born ten days ago. A full-grown man born ten days ago."

2021 was a good year for adding 'Demon With a Glass Hand' pages to my collection (another 16).  Here are five favorite pages submitted:

There are some incredible pieces posted on CAF this year and some awesome ones here as well. Here are mine.

Superboy #83 interior page with the Kryptonite Kid (his dog Blor) and of course Krypto by George Papp. I love Krypto and getting this page with the Dog of Steel has been a hunt for many, many years.

Legion # 300 Superboy 1/2 Splash / Title page by Kurt Schaffenberger one of my favorite Superman Family artists

The Pale Light of Death by Pierce Rice (this is the title page of the complete story also posted on my CAF) Just a fun inclusion on my part.

Mythological Menagerie by Don Rosa - Don hand colored this one before releasing it to the wild. I really love the extra clouds and foliage he added to this original that wasn't in the printed version.

True Bride-to-be Romances cover by Jack Kirby - a surprise purchase for me. Never thought I would find a Kirby romance cover on the 'bay'. I have more than a few Kirby romance pages (both Simon & Kirby era and Marvel early 60's era), but was thrilled to add a cover to the collection.

Thanks everyone. Wished I could have voted for myself, but I had to vote my conscience and there were too many spectacular pieces this year which were absolute knockouts.
