Spirit Weekly Newspaper Inserts 3 3

[Artful Investments]

I had someone contact me about a run of Spirit Weekly comics. This is the 1940 series that was issued in newspapers. Does anyone know if CGC grades them? Does anyone offer services to help preserve them? I realize that newspaper is especially susceptible as it ages.

I did google first, but did not find an answer. Thus, I decided to post thinking you were a helpful sort but did expect sarcasm.

Yes, they can be CGCed. I have a few I just have bagged and boarded like a regular comic. 

They are the same dimensions as a typical golden age comic (though not nearly as thick)

As I said, I had googled it first. All I can say is that I must've mis-typed it because I only got a couple of hits for raw books, nothing graded. Trying it again, I see plenty of hits now so my initial search must've had a typo. Thank you for the suggestion.

However, I really did not expect all the sarcasm and hostility. I was simply looking for an answer to a simple question. I do very little with Golden Age and thought people in this forum would know more about Golden Age books than I do. I may be a noobie to the GA forum but I am not a noobie to forums.

Thank you so much for the helpful reply. I have never seen one of the Spirit Weekly books so I had no idea what they look like. I was envisioning them being full size relative to the newspaper. I'm glad to hear they fit in GA bags.

Not the best picture, but here is one. 

They aren't as many pages as a typical comic. 

Honestly, I love them. It was a great vehicle to help popularize comics and I love Will Eisner. Post pictures if you get them.

I don't know if I will end up getting them but will post if I do. He said he has 28 of the first 29 issues (missing #3).

We seem to have gotten off on the wrong foot.  It is very common nowadays for people to ask for assistance when a smidge of effort would supply all the info they want.  Since the answer to your question was so easily obtainable, I took you to be the lazy sort.  Now I know you're just more the...sensitive type.

Now, being a fan of the Spirit, I'll give you some constructive info.  You can find a wealth of data about past sales, both prices and huge pics of these Spirits, on HA.com.  Just search "spirit weekly cgc".  You can also find past sales data for slabs on gpanalysis.com.  It'll cost you $10.95 per month but many of us find it's well worth it, especially if you both buy and sell artful investments like comics books.  But on this site they're classified as "spirit sections".  The same for Ebay - "spirit sections cgc" will result in 3 current slabbed Spirit Sections for sale, all by Basement Comics.  Al Stoltz is the owner, he's a good guy who would probably be willing to talk to you about the Spirits if you call him, number available through Google.  Of course Ebay has numerous raw Spirit Sections for sale at any time.

All census data from CGC is under Spirit Section.

Will Eisner did all the pencil and ink work for the issues you mention.  Selling his half of the extremely lucrative business he had with Iger and arranging the syndication deal for The Spirit was an incredibly risky and ballsy move for Eisner. "It meant that I'd have to leave Eisner & Iger, which was making money; we were very profitable at that time and things were going very well. A hard decision."  

He got a $20,000 payout.  And the keys to an unknown future.  He was all of 22 years old at the time.

Yet this was what he'd always dreamed of, the pinnacle of what he had in mind for his career at the time - a national weekly audience, primarily adult rather than primarily children, and complete independence to tell his story, his way. "They gave me an adult audience", Eisner said in 1997, "and I wanted to write better things than superheroes. Comic books were a ghetto."

So yes let us know how your deal goes.  Post pics please.  And consider selling them here, on the boards, if that's in the cards.  We're very very friendly when it comes time to purchase!

Thanks for the words. I never meant to ruffle any feathers or waste anyone's time. I'm definitely not the lazy sort, just maybe not the best typist. It looks like I even left out the word "not" in my initial reply as I meant to say "I did not expect sarcasm". It sounded much worse to say "I did expect sarcasm".

Anyway, thanks for the information. I know next to nothing about The Spirit and only a little about Eisner. In general, I have not been much of a GA person. I've always been more into SA, at least until I picked up Moon Girl #3, which I think is the coolest cover of that short-lived series:

At this point I don't know if the guy even wants to sell but we are communicating and if I end up with them, I will definitely post here and consider selling them here.

If you pick them up, read them first. Like ECs and Barks Ducks, they have stood up to time very well. Excellent stories and beautiful, very graphic and beautiful art. You might find, you want to keep some.

Cool Moon Girl by the way. I recently picked up a copy of that one myself. Probably the only superhero book EC produced.

I don't think newspaper sections, like The Spirit, age differently from comic interiors.  The problem is storage.  Newspaper comics that I stored neatly in a pile are less damaged by age than pieces that are more exposed to air and heat.  Many of my sections are off white and in pretty good condition in spite of being 80 years old.

I store many sections in mylar with life-extender backer boards.  Similar preservation would be done by CGC graders.

I no longer have any large Sunday sections. I kept them in a flat file when I had them but they were just to much of a hassle to enjoy. I do have a number of the Spirit sections. They were designed to fold down to comic book size and are usually found that way. Awesome books.

Question. Have any of the various newspapers the sprit sections were bundles with and have logos for become more sought after than others?  And why?  Besides scarcity I guess.
