So I advertised for some books recently.  Someone answered my ad PUBLICLY with a good lead on a couple of books. And of course they quickly sold…but not to me.

This isn’t the first time this kind of thing has happened to me. I feel some people read want to buy ads, or they see someone’s collecting theme and say to themselves, “those are cool, I’m going to do that!”

The only way to avoid unwelcome competition is to keep your collection theme secret.  Especially when you’re looking for golden age books because often times there are only a few dozen graded examples or less.

So without divulging what you’re collecting, do you have a secret collection? A genre or theme of books that you’re collecting that you don’t want to advertise?

Yup

I do have a secret collection focus, but it isn't in comics. Its a extremely niche thing and there's about 10 people who care. Unfortunately all 10 of us are obsessively stalking the same places so feh.

I have never collected with a theme in mind, so I don't have a secret collection. Right now I am trying to build a sort of GA cover artist type set—at least one from each known artist, in other words—but I've had a hard time staying focused on that. There are so many different artists that I don't expect to ever finish. There are quite a few artists whose work I don't like that much, so I'm not being too picky about grade. For the ones I don't particularly like, I'm just looking for mid-grade  examples that present well.
