But he IS telling us his politics, by what he’s saying and by who he’s aligned with. It’s part of his company statement. You ARE being brow beaten with a message.

If the stories so good, why even bring up politics in the first place? Why not just put the comic out, promote it, and let it stand on its own?

Because Eric is well aware that the doofus’ that make up Comicsgate will rally behind the ideology and cough up $35 to make it look ‘hot’ and even come on the CGC Boards to try and get the speculator dummies to want to jump on board.

He’s just another EVS. No thanks. I’ve no interest in hate.

This is his official mission statement (code of ethics) and it has no mention of politics.

And we watched the video. By intentionally avoiding social issues and politics, we know exactly the type of person he's trying to appeal to. No thanks.

You mean people who don't want politics in everything.

I'm very liberal, but even I want a break and get some genuine escapism. If that's what he delivers, I'm happy. If he goes political in any direction, I'm out.

All I see are two groups of adults trying to win a schoolyard fight. It's too bad that having different opinions have become so terribly toxic.

Yeah. I'm bowing out in this thread. There's too many people who claim to be against hate that clearly hate this creator.

No hate involved at all. Just no interest. He's staking his claim to the Comicsgate crowd. I have no interest in being a part of that.

Their agenda is very clear. Their intention is very clear. They want to pretend LGBT people don't exist in the world.

Have at it. I'm just not interested.

Stating he doesn't want politics in his comic and then taking a CLEAR political stance on a controversial issue is the most extreme form of hypocrisy.

And it's the REASON he's generated those sales.

Now his audience wants to come on the forum and pretend "it's hot" and "the art looks really great" and try and dupe people while ignoring the real story. He's built his success off the backs of bigots.

Sorry, Ms. Marvel doesn't bother me. If it did I just wouldn't read it. Northstar being gay doesn't bother me. I don't read any comics with Northstar in it.

The list of white male hetereo superheroes is still larger, by far, than anything else.

I'm good.

I'm not Reddit. I post here about comics for the most part only. I'm a statue collector second and post only about statues other wise.

Your first post here was pretty suspect...

Maybe you DON'T have an ulterior motive in starting the thread. But... that sounds about as shilly to me as it gets.

Yup, that's how it started.

"The hashtag Comicsgate started in June 2017. A group of female Marvel employees posted a group selfie in which they were celebrating the legacy of recently deceased Flo Steinberg, one of Marvel’s earliest employees who had helped the company’s unique approach to fan outrage." They were having milkshakes in her honor.

Amazing, isn't it? That just some Marvel employees, having fun, could unleash all that hatred... wtf is wrong with people?

I’m against hate for people based on race, sexual orientation, etc.. I have plenty of hate however for those who choose to believe and act on nonsense, especially when it hurts others.

You know, I get not wanting "an agenda shoved down [your] throat," but that's different than there being politics in comics. I think the most interesting comic (especially super-hero) stories involve ethical dilemmas which at least in part examine where characters are politically.

Thinking about prose fiction, I read Upton Sinclair's The Jungle some years back. It's a pretty decent novel that involves working conditions in meat-packing in early 20th century Chicago. It's compelling, up to the point near the end where one of the characters goes on a rant about Socialism. At that point I think it kinda loses the reader, because it's clearly the author just laying out where he stands. It's my understanding that Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged (or maybe it's The Fountainhead) is similar in that way. (One of those books apparently contains a 40-page rant by a character that is clearly a stand-in for Rand.) I can get not wanting *that*. But not weaving in something that involves current living conditions in the real world doesn't really bring anything new to the table.

He’s associated with Comicsgate. lol

Ya I wasn't aware with even what that was, but given the confused reaction to my only posts, I'm getting a clearer picture lol

Lol @ "no politics!". You just need to read the comments posted on that site to understand what he's selling.

Don’t even read comics but I support the movement lmfao.

No politics and no agenda, yet the commenters all seem to have the same ideas about the book. Eric July understands a nod is as good as a wink.

I'm half-wondering if this book will even ship. A small outfit shipping 40,000+ books is a logistical nightmare.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, because I had never heard about this situation before this thread.

To summarize: an anti-LGBTQ-rights social media influencer has taken in over a million dollars from his followers to possibly print a comic book, and they are happy to give him that money because he promises that there will be no homosexual, bisexual, or transgendered characters featured in it?

I suppose that there is a market for everything, and this situation is definitely news-worthy.  I wouldn't be surprised if mainstream media picks up on this, especially with his vocal followers posting about it everywhere.  Personally, like stock_rotation said above, I also doubt that these books will even ship anytime soon, let alone be of comparable quality to Marvel, DC or the other established publishers.

Thanks

$35 a pop - and already sold 30,000+ copies.

Nice work if you can get it.

I'm sure I'm missing something (shrug)

Same here. If there has been $3M+ raised and 41,000+ contributors - that’s an average $84 spent per customer. That seems kinda high. I mean, if one guy spent $20, that means another guy has to spend $144. Or if an LCS is buying copies, they have to be getting wholesale, right?

Seems skewed. I mean, good luck to the guy - but the numbers seem fuzzy to me, so I must be missing something.
