They finally caved.

It's hard to impute someone else's motives without direct insight into their thinking. That said, I disagree with you. There are plenty of valid reasons to acknowledge newsstand editions and to reholder comics that aren't presently labeled as such.

As far as pre-1986 "Rarity", your comment is not completely wrong. I would not describe newsstands before 2000 as "rare" but many of them appear on the market in significantly smaller quantities than their newsstand counterparts, particularly in higher grades. By "higher grades", I mean about 8.0 and up. In my research, even when newsstand distribution swamped direct distribution, thus making directs the rare ones, the directs still appear on the market in higher quantities than newsstands. There are a few exceptions to this, like Amazing Spider-Man #252, which has a large population of high grade surviving newsstands available. That particular comic seems to be split about 50/50 in market availability. ASM #298, 299, and 301 however, are all less common in newsstand than direct.

Here are some examples from ASM based on a sample taken last year. 

#252: 385 auctioned/201 NS. In grade 9.0+ 163D/167NS (1:1 ratio)
#300: 290 auctioned/43 NS. In grade 9.0+ 200D/13NS (15:1 ratio)
#301: 83 auctioned/74 NS. In grade 9.0+ 53D/1NS (53:1 ratio)

ASM V2 is much rarer overall than anything in V1 but earlier issues from 1999 are easier to find in NS than the last 100 issues, which are very hard to find. I've been trying to put together a complete set of V2 in NS edition for 3 years. So far, the only NS I've seen but passed on is #601, because their condition has always been too low (about a 7.0). Every other NS I've seen, I've bought, no matter how many copies I already had. Despite that, I'm still missing about 60% of the run. Many of the issues I've never seen. 

Because I like Darwyn Cooke, I wanted to get Catwoman #1-4 from the 2002 series in NS. To date, I've never seen NS editions of #1 or #3. The rest of the series, I soon discovered, is incredibly difficult to find in NS. Right now, I have most of the issues from #2-41 (with the notable exception of #3 and, I think, #12). I don't have anything from #42-87 but have been looking every day. Another Cooke I'd like to have is Jonah Hex #33, #50 and #56. They have terrific covers by Cooke but I've never seen NS editions of either. I have a couple of later JH issues in NS but not the ones I want.

As far as grade is concerned, in NS edition, 9.8's are about as easy to find as 10.0's in direct. As a percentage of total population, 9.6 seems to be the NS equivalent of Direct 9.8. That doesn't tell the whole story though. That is because the falloff from 9.6 to 8.0 is like a cliff compared to directs. With directs, grades between 9.2-9.8 are more evenly distributed than NS editions, which rapidly favor lower grades.

Speaking of low grade rarities, Canadian editions from the 1980's are even harder to find in high grade than their US counterparts. They are all NS editions also. Because US editions aren't that hard to find from the 1980's, I favor Canadians from that time period. For the same reason, I favor Jeweler's editions from the 1970's, and UK editions from the 1960's-early 1970's.

I've tweeted on this already here, but the printings were created to order for Whitman and ceased to exist when Whitman's order ended, so the term is a reasonable one, regardless of whether anyone else — other bagged jobbers or comics shops — were ever sold copies out of the run.

That said, it's great that CGC has separated out the two eras, as it helps people with the history a little. The Direct Market was becoming a big deal in 1977, but it didn't rate its own printing yet. But a large order from a firm that sold into department stores did nudge Marvel to do something.

People can claim highest newsstand in the Census

I think this is a big improvement. I have sent in a lot of news stand and Canadian price variants, and up until now they have made the notation on certain books and not others. This creates more consistency and acknowledges that a group of collectors hunt for news stand copies. I also like that they will be split out better in GPAnalysis moving forward since some "big sales" in certain books were just news stands that hit the market.

I would applaud CGC for doing what was desired by the collecting base if a competitor didn't already do so years in advance.

I pity the new collectors out there that are going to pay premiums on newsstands from the 1980s. Not all newsstands are rare.

No, it will make the cheap hucksters even more insufferable as they claim that only 200 of the 8000 copies are Newsstands, ignoring that 7500 copies were graded before this went into effect, just as they already do with the issues that CGC already arbitrarily recognized and separated before this.

Plus, this will still only be a record of what CGC has seen... and not mislabeled.
