A couple of 'wow' auction results to me....

$16k for small art Kirby/Coletta Thor. Cool 4-panel action page, but not really a complete shot of Thor/Thor's face.

$21k for Milgrom 9-panel interior.  Yes, it's Black Costume Spidey kissing upside-down, but man, 21k for Milgrom interiors. I'm shocked.

$45k Buscema Galactus (1988) splash. Not from the original Surfer run...Is this a lot? It seems like a lot.

It's out of my realm, but I am surprised at the Spidey page. It's a 9-panel filled with lots of dialogue, a couple small full and 1/2 figures and no action - it reminds me a lot of a V For Vendetta page. Is the valuation of the page driven more by the 'historical' aspect of the page, rather than the art itself?

The OA market right now makes me think of the old urban legends regarding Bronze Age books. People used to say there were warehouses filled with BA books still wrapped and bound, and that BA wasn't worth much (this was waaaaaay before the spike in value). To my knowledge, there was never a "warehouse" find and marketing flooding of hig-grade uncirculated BA books (despite all the hilarious "uncirculated" Ebay auction descriptions).

The correlation being that with all the potential comic pages out there, the thought is that seemingly "big" pages are tied up in collections, etc never to see the light of day (until people drop dead and their families release their collections to auction?). But, could that be an urban legend as well? What if these pages aren't out there? What if they got purchased for mere dollars back in the 80's when they weren't valued and subsequently met their demise - a demise we (the public) might not even know because it's lost to time?

Pages 12, 18, 21 and this one are accounted for on CAF. But there are several other pretty good pages from the book (below) that should be out there somewhere. I went through the book and found 12 Spidey 'action' type pages, with only a few publicly accounted for (behind the spoiler tags).

Is it reasonable to believe that all the pages are still in existence somewhere? If so, shouldn't that keep the price down when one comes to auction that has less action and smaller panel composition in comparison to the other existing pages? Knowing that the rest are out there and it's just a waiting game? Or, is there a belief (or knowledge) that many of these pages have been destroyed or lost, and that very few exist - and the historical nature of the issue (early black costume).

Not to take away from the buyer - whomever it is, congrats on getting a piece that they clearly wanted - I'm curious to other people's beliefs on what they think about the other pages of a book (any book, not just this one): are they out there *somewhere*? Have they been lost or destroyed? Does it really matter if they survived, because with the amount of collectors vying for only 22 pages of a book makes each page uniquely and incredibly valuable?

Spoiler

Regarding Milgrom, I will say that there's quite a bit of nostalgia for PPSM from around that time.

The romance with Black Cat was a storyline that tied stories together for a couple years, and that stretch included a great Doc Ock saga, some Punisher issues, some Cloak & Dagger stuff (they were "hot" back then)

Still, Milgrom was the artist everyone at my LCS used to take jabs at back when I was a teen, which is why that page blew me away.

This Michael Turner Witchblade Trading card was sold for $3k

The sabber-toothed tiger is stunning, but the Witchblade gauntlet is only in the shadow. Strong price for quarter-fullpage illustration.

I never followed up on this, thanks for posting the result. I agree - it was a nice piece, but the size of it turned me off a bit. That being said, it went for more than I would have thrown at it, so what do I know? lol

On the flipside of that, the fact that he had crammed so much beautiful line-work into the small space is a pretty amazing example of what talent he had. I wonder what that price would have been had it been a full 11x17 piece for the trading card. $9k? More?
