Yeah, both of those titles were so unique and interesting for the times, they really did power the entire line of comics.

The rest of that first wave, just kind of fell off, especially after Stan tried to farm them out to others... Ant-man, Human Torch, and... Thor would have, but Kirby came back and took it over  - making it the third best seller of Marvel's Silver Age.

Thor 3d wow, I was thinking maybe Sgt Fury...especially the eary issues, with Kirby might make a dent?

It might have! Unfortunately, I only have numbers for Sgt. Fury starting in 1966...

With Journey Into Mystery, it grew from 187,000 in 1963 to 232,000 in 1965... by the time it changed it's name to Thor, it would do from 296,000 to 298,000 for the next 3 years, making it Marvel's #3 LISTED title*. It would fall to 262,000 in 1969's listing, but still hold on to the #3 Marvel spot.

Of course this was still a far cry from DC's #3 title - in 1966 and 1967 it was Superboy at 608,000 and 547,000, Batman at 533,000 in 1968 and then in 1969, Superboy again at 465,000.

*one day soon we'll see ALL the numbers, but for 1966-1969, we do have ASM, FF and Thor...

Since you are charting THE true history of the creation of the marvel universe, is anyone left alive from that period whom you can talk to or interview?...is there a wish list for those who are left, If so, it would be great to post up the interview in this thead? GO FOR IT!!!!

ON NEWSSTANDS JUNE 1962

Amazing Fantasy #15 - Jack Kirby of course would do the cover, but it's all Ditko inside (signed Stan Lee & S. Ditko on the splash).

Chapter ONE:

Interesting no hyphen for SPIDER MAN on the cover...Editor lapse?  Whereas Ditko's cover has the hyphen.  Maybe it was done consciously as the two words are stacked vertically, so as not to have a hanging hyphen if you will.  They could've of course made it into a single line but someone probably liked how it stacked filling in that area of the cover.
