The aircraft on that cover are Northrop F-89 Scorpions. One version of the Scorpion carried Genie nuclear-armed air-to-air missiles, intended to bring down incoming groups of Soviet bombers with one shot!

Always love your research and insights. 

This tidbit is all the more important since the Australian version you posted sadly lost the bomber (seen very small in the upper left) from the original. I assume that happened when they layered over the stat with the Rangers logo but it's quite a loss for the story-telling of the cover.
