Not too bad for a first outing I guess, tied for 21st place by contestant, tied for 7th by final score.

According to Mike's grade distribution table, 97 players completed Round 4 (down from 128 at sign-up, 121 in Round 1, 114 in Round 2, and 108 in Round 3).  Here are the key measures of central tendency for this round (Mean = the average grade; Median = the middle grade in a numerically rank-ordered list; Mode = the most common grade):

The Board scored 100 bulls-eyes in Round 4 (21% of all grades submitted, compared to 23% in Round 1, 17% in Round 2, and 24% in Round 3).  Here are a few other notable observations based on the data reported above:

• Book #16 (Chilling Tales #13):  An average difficulty book for the Board as a whole, with 23% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 69% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was nearly one grade increment more lenient than CGC (4.4 vs 4.0). 
• Book #17 (Diary Secrets #30):  A challenging book for the Board as a whole, with only 19% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and only 46% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was about one and one-half grade increments more critical than CGC (4.3 vs 5.0). 
• Book #18 (Horrific #3):  Another challenging book for the Board as a whole, with only 18% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and only 47% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was about one and one-half grade increments more critical than CGC (2.3 vs 3.0). 
• Book #19 (Doctor Solar #1):  The easiest book for the Board as a whole, with 28% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 64% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board agreed with CGC (5.0 vs 5.0). 
• Book #20 (Avengers #7):  Yet another challenging book for the Board as a whole, with only 16% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and only 52% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was about one and one-half grade increments more lenient than CGC (7.7 vs 7.0). 

Congratulations to the victors and condolences to the vanquished.  And kudos to Mike for yet another well-run contest.

So, just for kicks, recalculate your total Contest score using "signed deltas": -2 for your guess being 2 grade increments too low, -1 for your guess being 1 grade increment too low, 0 for a bullseye, +1 for your guess being 1 grade increment too high, +2 for your guess being 2 grade increments too high, and so on.  What's your cumulative 20-book tally now?  Did the errors to the low side and high side more or less balance out?  Or is your tally way negative or way positive (in which case you're consistently being too strict or too lenient with your condition assessments)?

 Chances are your score using signed deltas will be much smaller than your score using absolute/unsigned deltas.  If that's the case, your errors are balancing out (which is exactly what Ed predicted would happen for a decent grader).  Here's an example using my own Round 1+2+3+4 guesses (20 books):

 

  5 Bullseyes = 0

  3 times my guess was one grade increment too low = -3

  7 times my guess was one grade increment too high = +7

  3 times my guess was two grade increments too low = -6

  2 times my guess was two grade increments too high = +4

 

 My total signed delta score would be 0 - 3 + 7 - 6 + 4 = +2 for the 20-book challenge.  That's an average error of one-tenth of one grade increment (0.1).    Compare that to my total absolute/unsigned delta score (my actual contest score) of 20, or an average error of one grade increment per book.  This is exactly what Ed Jaster predicted would happen for a person whose grading standards are essentially in line with CGC's.

Besides a smokin' final round, I thought I graded poorly this contest. But I did the Delta thing.

My total sign delta for this contest was flat.

If I count points that way, my score is -1.2 for all the comics as an absolute grade difference. If I do it using the point system, it is 5 for all 20 comics..

I’d consider a 20 a perfect score - obviously 0 is perfect but given the subjective nature of grading, being consistently a half grade off seems like as perfect as realistically perfect gets. So I’m pretty happy with a slightly above average finish. If I throw out one or both of the trick books in RD2 this is by far my best showing ever.
