A "Top of the Hobby" book (thumbsu

It's in the "A" group of my wantlist. If my SS would kick in, I could've snagged it, but being out of work with this stroke has clipped my wings a bit. I shudder to think what an unread copy might fetch. GOD BLESS ...

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, Gold Medal 417  1st Print 1954    $100  SOLD to goldust40

The rare first printing of the First Edition of this Matheson horror classic. The cover art is Stanley Meltzoff's masterpiece.

VF minus.  Square, tight and bright with great gloss. A very nice copy, has some superficial creases and edgewear, light dust shadow on bottom back, slightly musty smell. Clean interior, a real looker overall.

I haven't had as much fun as collecting paperbacks since I first discovered Atlas Comics, and that was a LONG time ago. Comics have kind of left me at the station. GOD BLESS ...

Utopia 14 (Player Piano) by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.  Bantam A1262  1st PB edition 1954 $25

1st PB of a scarce classic with a great Charles Binger cover

VG/F  Square tight and bright, has a chip and tearing at upper left corner, wear at right side and on spine, still attractive over all.

Love Player Piano, did Vonnegut have many early ones released in paperback like this?

I always loved the NYT review on the front cover of this one - "comes awfully close to being a great work of science-fiction." If I remember correctly, I think this book was nominated for a Hugo award. Plus, Leigh Brackett wrote the original screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back and although it was rejected, I think they kept several of her original ideas in the final version. Except Yoda was called something weird and I can't remember what it was.

He was called Minch and was frog like. Her general framework and outline stayed intact but there were some significant changes that are now key in Star Wars lore.

I was a bit to young to meet her before her death in 1978 but one of my cousins has a massive SF collection and met her and the hubby a few times including the 1971 SDCC I believe. It had nothing to do with his death but I always found it a bit ironic she died almost exactly a year later than Ed. Had she lived into the 1980’s or later no doubt Star Wars fans would have been all over her.

No, only 4 in the early 50's & 60's that I know of, this one, The Sirens of Titan (Dell) and two Gold Medals, Canary in a Cat House and Mother Night. He started getting a TON of pbs in the 70's

I'm going to take a few minutes to clean the thread up for the re-cap and then get going again on some more science fiction to start with :foryou:

I'm tempted to offer a 10% premium on your sticker price if you'll pm the offerings to me first so all this goodness doesn't vanish east.

:foryou:

Woo, purdy!  I'm surprised my first reading was also a Dell Edition
51onkeLxMeL._SL350_.jpg

probably about what my copy looks like if it's even still together ><

I'm not sure I like the Gold Medals but I like the other two, especially the Dell (not to mention The Sirens of Titans is a fave.  Player Piano is damned good, too).

Sorry to spam up your thread here :peace:
