I like the artistic direction of the prelim more than the published cover, but realize that the intent was to build suspense and stand out on the spinner rack.

I forgot two.

Note: I do not own any of the art shown though I do own the comics. :)

This one shows the progression of a cover from Marie Severin's prelim to Kirby's finished pencils to Frank Giacoia's inks to publication. Click the image to learn more.

This one shows Carmine Infantino's ideas on how to improve a cover. It starts with a Curt Swan cover. It then shows Carmine's rough, Nick's inked pencils, and the finished cover.

Note: I do not own any of the art though I do own the comics.

Curious who did these prelims. I like them a lot, but they look like John Romita rough drawings. Is the "Marie Severin" written on them to indicate that she was to do the finished covers, or were her rough work much more dynamic and balanced than her finished work?

Marie Severin did the Daredevil and Thor covers.  Not sure who did the ASM 96 prelim.  For some reason there were two prelims made of that issue.   One def by Kane and the other by Severin or maybe Romita?  That one has a pasted on piece with prelim drawings of spiders and the Goblin's head by Stan Lee

I've added another prelim to my collection. This one is a Pint-Size Pin-Up from Sugar and Spike #83.

It's fun to see how he changed and strengthened even these drawings. For example, note the change in direction of the dog head. The printed version is better. Most of my pages have patch panels as he worked to nail the story even after a page was completed. Remarkable work. Click to get a bigger picture.

The word prelim doesn't seem fitting for drawings of this quality. The detail you see is exactly why these artists are so highly regarded.(thumbsu

Two Deadpool pages from New Mutants #98 were sold at Heritage a little while back as prelims. However, if you listen to Rob Liefeld’s podcast, he and Marat Mychaels explain his process during this era. These were the original pencils done on smaller paper (which is how Rob liked to work) then a Xerox machine was used to reproduce a larger copy which would be inked by Marat.

I wish I had purchased both pieces but could only afford one at the time. Congrats to whoever owned the other! Mine is currently on display at the Marvel Exhibit in Wellington, New Zealand.

Wow what a freaking page to own! Not only is it the first time we ever see Deadpool by the creator but it also features an important moment for Cable! What an awesome piece of Marvel history right there!
